Packed with Information, Riddled with Typos and Omissions

I have been using this text in a wastewater engineering course. It covers the different aspects of wastewater engineering well, providing in depth treatments of each. However, the great size of this book (over 1800 pages) may also be its weakness, making it an unmanageable project for the editors.

In one month of usage, I have found serious gaps in the problems. Many cross-references are incorrect, and there are some problems which omit values required for solution.

In short, this is a good source of information. With closer editing, it could be better.

Excellent Textbook, Lacks Global Perspective

I bought the book and it is worth every dollar, including the additional 18% sales tax in Israel. It is a monumental work, very clear and well written. We needed this book. Having said that, I feel that the reuse aspects in general and the "unplanned indirect drinking reuse" in particular, have received only a marginal coverage in the book. That may be sufficient for the U.S.A., but innumerable European and Asian cities base their water supply on rivers that are mostly treated wastewater. In Israel, agriculture is based on reuse yet in the book, agriculture has the same weight as golf courses. Again, in the U.S.A. it may be so, but certainly not in the rest of the world. Industrial reuse mentions only evaporative cooling and that without the critical problem of blowdown disposal. Additional examples would be helpful. In reuse issues, "emerging patogens" (i.e., those feared but yet inexistent) are given more attention that critical problems such as salt content and subsequent aquifer and soil salination. Table 13-6 does not even mention salt. The inclusion of European and Israeli contributors would have produced an even better, a more balanced work.

MUST HAVE FOR ALL SANITARY ENGINEERS

I can't stress enough the value in this text. Like my title states this is a must have for all sanitary engineers. The book covers everything you must know concerning wastewater treatment written by professionals working in the field. I would hope some day that they publish a book on pump stations and sanitary sewer design as well. I think that they would also be on the top of the list for these areas as well.

Readable, Understandable Analysis of Great Minds

Is it fair to rate such persons by other authors who analyze them? I think so. In the case of Goethe, I highly recommend reading some of his works and the conversations with Peter Eckermann. What's crucial is understanding Goethe's main thesis and outlook in comparison to his contemporary Kant and how he influenced subsequent philosophers such as Hegel, who tried to bridge Kant and Goethe, unsuccessfully and Shiller, the poet, who unsuccessfully tried the same.
On Kant: you can spend a year or more reading his verbose and heavily obscure style which one must read each sentence twice before digesting, or one can read Kaufmann's book and another great book on Kant - Karl Jaspers, Philosophy Volume 1. You really do walk away from this book with a basic understanding of Kant and how he both differs from Goethe - allot, and how he influenced philosophy as we know it. He was a Platonist, Goethe was not. Kant equated life a series of maxims all based on reason, part of a universal, while Goethe saw humanity always in developmental stages, living in uncertainty.
This goes with Hegel too. Read some amazon.com reviews on his Phenomenology of the Spirit and you can see, there are those that love to read philosophy but recommend not investing a great deal of time and effort on Hegel. Although one must read Hegel to fully know Hegel. I think Kaufmann does justice. It's nice to have at least a basic grip on both who these men were, what they taught and a limited degree on their background and minds - psychology.
Definitely worth the read.

Kaufmann's mediocre Nietzcheanism

This is quite possibly the poorest exposition of these people ever written- and the rest of the series is the same. His translations of Nietzche are excellent and beautiful but as a philosopher Kaufmann is trying to speak with the mouth of Nietzche, but a rather poor Nietzche at best. The angry style is sad for an academician unless he or she is a genius of Nietzche's calibre.

Lost in the Past

I read this book in its early years, and the subjects of the book hardly excited me, but it was the first volume of a trilogy, and I was ready to try to prove that figures in a modern America rich with electronic soundtracking of music for every form of public activity (and for more private activities than were written about in his philosophy) was a much richer form of emotional communication than any that Goethe was able to write down on a page. On the topic of sex alone, I could hum more tunes than he knew, maybe. But the funny thing was that he considered "Kant's immense influence has proved catastrophic." Among the recently departed, Isaiah Berlin is quoted on the back of this book praising Kaufmann for making people see that Hegel "was a most audacious, profound and devastating, at times wildly turbulent, thinker." I wish I could ask everybody, aren't we all? Page 288 raised the question "how I would feel if someone sent me an essay of such length in which he tried to show how Nietzsche had been 'a disaster.'" I think he would feel even worse, or possibly more joyous in another's misfortune, if he could read all the web pages that show what people, now, are saying about Martin Heidegger, who is merely accused of "Dogmatic Anthropology" in the Trilogy outline which appeared in this volume.

Top 10 Questions for Entry Level Candidates
My favorites are the off the Wall Questions. For instance, "Give me 3 reasons that manhole covers are round." I was asked this when I was interviewing one time, and it really made me think.
If you are looking for a source of general non technical interview questions then would be a good book for you. If you are looking for more technical questions, then you will probably want to get a different book.

For me this is a great resource!

Here is the one that convinced me that I would like this book. It's from Chapter 7 ("Can you take the heat?") on page 84.
"Q. When you've had a really GOOD day at work and you go home and kick back and you feel satisfied, what was it about that day that made you feel really good?
"Q.When you have had a really BAD day at work and you go home and feel upset, what was it about that day that made you feel really upset?
"A. In answer to the first question, technical people will offer as a reason for a really good day the solution of a really juicy technical problem. A bad day for them is often when they had to deal with other people. This is important information, because the jobs I'm staffing are people jobs. These are very effective questions in distinguishing candidates who may be great technicians but who would be uncomfortable dealing with people to the extend the job requires."
This is an excellent book. I have read a number of other articles and books on interviewing, and I have come across many of the questions in the book, in one form or another. As far as I am concerned, that validates the content of the questions.
The background, however, (the "answers," if you will) is somewhat scant. I didnt feel like I needed it. But I wonder if this were my first book whether or not I would have liked it as much. The author explains the lack of "answers" in the Introduction and his explanation is acceptable.

True management classic which will remain influential

This book, written in 1960, is one of the true management classics, one of the greatest and most influential management books of the past century. McGregor describes Theory X and Theory Y, two fundamentally different ways managers view their employees. McGregor describes Theory X as the dominant view: people ar seem as lazy, not very capable, unwilling to work (unless you make them work), opportunistic and prepared to deceive (providing they think they won't be caught). Theory Y views people in a much more positive way: they are seen as intrinsically motivated, willing to work and basically honest. Now the essential point: the way you view people determines the way you treat them and the way you interpret their behavior, which determines the way they will respond to you, which in turn will reinforce the way you view(ed) them. In other words: both Theory X and Theory Y are true because they create their own reality! They are self-fulfilling prophecies. If you have a choice, what do you choose? This book, written many years ago, is still an interesting read and I think you can still read it in 2060 and find it relevant and interesting.

McGregor wrote this management classic 25 years ago. It is as relevant today as it was then. This is not to be missed by any generation of manager who truly wants to motivate employees in a manner which recognizes their most human characteristics.

Let people find reward in their work without gimmickry.

This book changed my life. I assumed I was lazy because I didn't like my work. McGregor helped me to see that I wasn't simply mercenary in my attitude toward work. He posits that each person can discover an almost hidden potential for satisfaction at work that will drive the individual to heights of achievement that are as intrinsically satisfying and remunerative to him/her as they are, of course, to the employer. I used to preserve a status quo and just mouth agreement to get along. I was unhappy because work didn't satisfy latent higher order achievement goals which I think I had subjugated through fear. Regardless of this personal scenario, what I think McGregor provides are key clues and methods for creating an environment in which the fear of offering ideas goes away. There are key pychological/environmental conditions which give rise to people who begin offering ideas and personal investment that they previously could never believe were possible. Read this book if you are hungry to have your people discover their strengths and begin to use them. Read this book if you are wondering what its going to take for you personally to buy into what your company is doing. I would rather be the janitor at NASA who believes his efforts are putting a man on the moon than an executive who has lost vision for what his company is doing.

As with its first two editions, this is based on the multivolume McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology, in this case the seventh edition published in 1992 (favorably reviewed here [RBB S 1 92]). That review holds for the concise encyclopedia as well, since the articles are just abbreviated versions of the original. The Concise Encyclopedia contains some 7,900 alphabetically arranged articles (300 new to this edition), with more than 1,600 photographs and line drawings. An analytical index aids in locating information for topics that do not have their own entries. There are also 15 appendixes covering such topics as the Greek alphabet, conversion tables, the periodic table of elements, mathematical notations, a geological time scale, and biographical listings.

This is an excellent, affordable one-volume encyclopedia that is highly recommended for all libraries that do not own the multivolume set. It is easy to use, has an excellent format, is highly reputable, and is up-to-date as of 1992. It may be time, however, to divide this work into two volumes. The weight of this one-volume edition is such that it may become a safety hazard. Being dropped a few times will quickly destroy its binding, not to mention injuring a toe or two.

Long Book, Good Book

This is one of the best science books ever!! It has hundreds, maybe thousands, of entries all about SCIENCE!!!!! It is 2080 pges. long, but within all of those pages is a lot of info. Also, this book is directed torward more teenagers than kids, and if you don't like science, then you might as well nat waste your money. I got to help test-drive this textbook's material by being in a course taught by Dr. Lyons' as the book was being published, and let me tell you, this book is chock full of information about air & gas drilling. The detail is amazing, giving step-by-step examples in calculating flowrates of various drilling methods, such as aerated and foam drilling. Graphs are provided for different flowrates with all the major industry-standard drill pipes, and other helpful graphs such as geothermal gradient, surface temperature and pressure.
I took the course using this textbook as part of a Petroleum Engineering curriculum. However, this book applies to a multitude of other industries, because of environmentally-friendly and economic nature. It'll cover all the basics for you. Don't know what kinds of air compressors are out there, and how they work? Need to know the different kinds of drilling platforms are in use? Don't know the difference between direct and reverse circulation? This book has got you covered. Air and gas drilling is the next big thing in rotary drilling.
