Great Book for the Practicing Design Engineer

This book is the classic in practical heat transfer design. The first few chapters cover theory, while the remainder of the book is devoted to specific design problems...accompanied by fully detailed examples. Some readers may argue that it is too detailed (in today's age of computer simulators), however, stepping through details helps the designer gain an intuitive understanding of heat transfer design considerations. From single component to multiple component heat transfer with phase change (including accounting for the presence of non-condensibles), it's covered, though dated in its approach (the book was first published in 1950). In summary, if you are looking for a book that bridges the gap between theory and actual operation, look no further!

Dated but Critical Text

Although this book was written in 1950, the text is still critical. I used the section on direct-contact heat exchangers to design a contact condenser back in 2002. The text is still relevant, the examples current and useful, and some calculation methods still not covered properly in more advanced text. I should point out that although some of the equations are old, they are simplier to use than newer text and require fewer inputs. Besides, when are you going to need calculations accurate to beyond 90%?

A Must for Practicing Engineers Involved in Heat Transfer

When Kern wrote this book, I am sure that he never imagined it would become a classic! Although some of the coefficient equations have improved slightly over the years, the methods developed in this book are as useful then as now. He literally covers all aspects of heat transfer, cooling towers and direct contact condensers, shell and tube, mixed gas condensation, boilers, direct-fired heaters, coils, etc.. You must have this book.

Poorly written

In general, the book is very poorly written. There is no style or organization. The author did not seem to care about editing and proof-reading. He fails to explain things clearly. There are numerous typos. Here are some examples. He twice made simple arithmatic errors, for example: 2^7-2=125, on pages 412 & 416. On page 409, the author claims 'VLSMs were explained in detail in the OSPF section.' The fact is that there was a brief description of OSPF on p.361 but VLSM was not mentioned there. OSPF is described in greater detail on pp.458-474 but VLSM was not mentioned there either! The author keeps referring to that mysterious OSPF section on p.414: 'This (the longest match rule) is also discussed in the OSPF section of the book.' I cannot find where it is discussed in the 'OSPF section' on pp.458-474. And he does not really discusses what VLSM is. He simply said 'We can move the mask around the simple network ID.' (p.413) Well, how to 'move around'? He then said 'VLSM can get very, very confusing.' (p.413) I guess it is indeed confusing - to him. I am not sure if he understands it himself. On p.418 he talks about some 'contigous, common prefix'. There is simply no such thing. For example, 001 is the common prefix of 0010, 0011 and 00111 but 001 cannot be contiguous with itself. 0011 and 0010 are contiguous but they are not common. As you can see, the author has some problem with the English language. And the example he gives on p.418 is simply wrong: those addresses are not contiguous, for example, what if somebody else is using 20.127.1.33? I urge readers to consider buying some other books, like those authored by university professors, who tend to be more careful in what they are saying. (The author of this book is the 'Director of Engineering' of a company in North Carolina.)

This book gives a detailed but consise overview of all the major protocols such as TCP/IP, Novell IPX/SPX, LLC, Apple, XNS etc. It also gives a overview of Ethernet, IEEE-802.3 and IEEE-802.5. This book is considered by many including myself to be a kind of Network Protocol Bible. It gives enough detailed information so that you can obtain a general understanding of each of the protocols examined. If a more through understanding of a particular protocol is the objective, you'll have to look elsewhere. I highly recommend this book as a Network Protocol Reference. It has been invaluable as a reference for the work that I do.

An easy and interesting read

Written by a professor of history at Eastern Michigan State University, this book is chiefly concerned with the social, cultural and economic history of modern Russia. Military history is touched upon briefly and always with an eye on the social impact upon Russian society. World War I is discussed in only a few pages. World War II has its own chapter, but it is only 13 pages long. Education, religion, literature and the arts receive more attention than all military conflicts combined. This book is for readers looking for an overall picture of Russian life. Those individuals will be rewarded with briskly paced chapters that paint a rich picture of Russia. Even at 500+ pages I was never bored or tempted to skip through any sections. Since reading this book, current events in Russia seem perfectly comprehensible (almost inevitable). Each chapter ends with an extensive list of suggested readings and the general bibliography contains 12 pages of additional sources.

a pretty good buy

The games in this book require few props, which is one reason i like it. However there are many numerical and verbal exercises which might not be suitable for all groups. The games are well classified and easy to find in the book. The ones on creative thinking, learning and communication are particularly good. I work with students and have used many of the games with success. This book can be used for any type of audience, overall it is a pretty good buy.

The activities proved very effective for planning days especialkly in summer months. Many activities were very useful for team building within the organization. Many fun activities yet at the same time applkicable to team building process. The organization of the chapters made it easy to find various topics. Highly recommend book for work groups that have trouble working in teams or spend a lot of individual effort to a project. Valuable information on working in teams to accomplish gfoals by listening to varied opinions on the same topic.

Excellent reference for the aircraft owner

As a new aircraft owner, I am trying to learn as much as I can about my aircraft. This book is well-written and easy to understand. Although not everything in it relates directly to my plane, all the information is valuable in understanding aircraft systems.

This book has taught me many things that were never covered in my training, and reinforced those that were.

I highly recommend this book to both aircraft owners and renters. Knowledge is power and will help keep you safe.

Good for students yet too general for professionals

I work in the chemical operations sector. I will highly recommend this book for 3rd or 4rth year future chemical engineers. It contains viable information on many units that they will just have to know about. However, I will not recommend it for working operation engineers. It is too general for us, it doesn't problem shoot units such as pumps and compressors. I don't think that I have much use for this book, specially that I own the Perry's Handbook.

This book is an annotated index to Perry's

Warning: This is not a textbook. Basically, they took out some of the stuff from Perry's and rewrote it more carefully and filled in some of the details. In general, this book is hard to read, missing important things, and burdened with unimportant things. It really does no justice to the quality and quantity of amazing insight inside the head of Peter Harriott (from whom I've taken classes). I can't deny that it makes an awesome reference book, but woe to any class that depends on this book.

The Longest Running Textbook in Unit Operations.

This is the longest running textbook in the discipline. The book's origin goes back to 1931 (Badger and McCabe, "Elements of Chemical Engineering). In 1956, Badger and McCabe went separate ways and McCabe wrote the first edition of Unit Operations of Chemical Engineering with J. C. Smith. Peter Harriott became a co-author for the 1985 edition. The continued use of the book in some universities just show the usefulness of the Unit Operations concept in chemical engineering education.

Practical Methods for Administering Quality Systems

20 years before anyone in the US heard of ISO 9000, Juran proposed the same ideas. He described comprehensive, documented quality management systems that were backed up by performance metrics and quality audits. Juran also pioneered quality circles and teams long before these ideas became cliche.
I find Juran immensely useful in my quality practice. This book remains one the standard works that I keep going back to. Juran's concepts are much more "applied" than "theoretical". Deming's works seem so distant, and esoteric. Juran has been there, done that. And, his methods work!

Good guide and information. Looks of information that needs study; however, it is not written for activities outside of the normal plant manufacturing world where one-of-a-kind product exist and are being made.

Great Quality Textbook

This is one of the basics (the other is Juran's Quality Control Handbook, at three times the thickness / cost; I also recommend the old "DataMyte Handbook" which was a company 'give-away' in the '80's). I have used previous editions for many years, and just bought this one since there are several available used, and I've been recommending them for the thoughful and documented rationale for the justification of n=30 sample size. That's just one example of the usefulness of this text in practical statistics for manufacturing and similar business applications. I recommend it highly.

About the Author

Proving that no sacrifice is too great in the name of science, avid hiker Roland Mueser once devised a controlled experiment and carried it out during blackfly season in the woods and swamps near his New Jersey home: He ran a 4-mile course through the woods wearing DEET repellent on alternate days, and tallied the number of bites sustained during each run.

Roland is the author of several books, and his articles have appeared in Appalachia, the Colorado Mountain Club magazine T&T, and other outdoor journals. A retired physicist, Roland is a former member of the engineering research faculty at Harvard University and Pennsylvania State University and was a research scientist for Bell Laboratories. After retiring, he thru-hiked the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail in 1989.

Engrossing... I couldn't put it down

As a frequent visitor to the USA I have for a long time had an interest in the Appalacian Trail and perhaps hiking it end-to-end (or "through hiking" as it is called) one day. Once I saw the cover "blurb" for Roland's book I just had to purchase it.
You realise upon opening this book for the first time that Roland has a very insightful and engaging writing style. This is a book that you can open up at any section and commence reading without feeling disconnected.
If you want a book that follows a through hiker's day-to-day experiences when walking the trail or one that details historic, geographic or topographic information discovered along Appalacian trail, then this is NOT the book for you.
However, if you want a book that thoughtfully covers all of the things one would want to know about when preparing for through hike of the Appalacian Trail or any other very long distance hike then this could be just what you are after.
The book is based upon the things Roland gleaned from his experience through hiking the trail, and from the information gained from interviews with some 100 plus people who also through hiked the trail.
For instance, I was fascinated on the discussion as to how many pairs of boots one can expect to wear out and the advantages that lightweight boots can provide over the more expensive leather ones.
Also, one would never expect anyone to take on such a monumental task as through hiking the trail in sneakers or without a tent, yet some did and succeeded. This book brings out many things specifically relevant to very long distance hiking that the average hiker wouldn't necessarily think about. That in itself is reason enough to buy this book.

Thoughful insight into the how, what and why's of long hikes

This book provides an interesting look at many varied aspects of a long distance hike. Insight is based upon a survey of long distance hikers on the AT and covers many subjects from equipment, clothing, personalities, women's issues, food, distance travelled, thoughts of the hikers themselves and more. Anyone interested in long distance hiking would enjoy this book!

Essential for any prospective thru hiker

I read this book in one sitting over several hours. I simply couldn't put it down. I've read over thirty books on thru hiking the AT and this is one of the premiere sources on the subject. Mueser himself is a thru hiker and he assembled comments, data and anecdotes from hundreds of others who have walked the length of the Appalachian Trail. The result is a fascinating exploration of what goes into the heart, mind, and body of all those hikers who make this pilgrimage.
Mueser arranges the information neatly by chapter. There are sections on animals, bugs, food, physical preparation and other things necessary to know before embarking on the trail. The narrative flows by smoothly and I was sad as I approached the end of the book because it was so immensely enjoyable. I would recommend this book highly for everyone who dreams of hiking the AT or those have already completed the journey.
My one criticism is the chapter on animals. Mueser writes with perception about the abundance of wildlife on the trail. It was then disconcerting and appalling that he used mouse traps to kill the little critters in various shelters. Someone should remind Mueser that the woods are the domain and home of the mice: HE is invading their world and he has no business setting traps and killing them, no matter how pesky they might be. This one incident spoiled some of the pleasure in reading the book, from my pro-animal perspective.
But in all other respects, this is a wonderful and interesting addition to your AT library.

In this sequel to his popular business/quality management book, Kaizen: The Key to Japan's Competitive Success (1986), Imai offers a step forward?continuous improvement (kaizen) applied to the concept of continuous improvement in the workplace (gemba). The book reflects a definite operations bias. Indeed, Imai advocates the removal of all those peripheral things (muda) that cloud the focus of an organization. Some of the principles, such as the need for good housekeeping, seem simplistic, but Imai is on solid ground, demonstrating the practicality of gemba kaizen with a number of abbreviated case studies. The one weakness is the lack of adequate recognition of precedent setters: F.W. Taylor's Principles of Scientific Management (1912) and the work of W.A. Shewhart, W.E. Deming, J. Every manufacturing and service professional should read it.

Gemba is the place where value-adding activities take place. Decisive results can be achieved by focusing improvement activities in gemba. The author encourages managers and professionals to spend time in gemba to see what is happening and to encourage the front-line workers. General George S. Patton could easily be described as a gemba man: he encouraged officers to go to the scene of the action instead of trying to "lead" from a headquarters in the rear. He also recognized the role of the frontline worker (soldier) in achieving results. As a result, the troops under Patton's command won amazing and seemingly impossible victories. Companies that want to hold their market share and capture their competitors' must understand this lesson. (Imai does not discuss Patton, but the historical parallel is obvious.) My books "The Way of discuss General Carl von Clausewitz' "friction" in a workplace context. Friction includes seemingly minor inefficiencies and problems whose combined effects degrade the organization's performance. Imai uses the word "muda" (waste), and stresses the need to suppress it. Tom Peters says, "The accumulation of little items, each too 'trivial' to trouble the boss with, is a prime cause of miss-the-market delays." (from "Thriving on Chaos.") Muda is essentially the same thing as friction. Imai also mentions "muri" (strain), which arises from inadequate training, poor ergonomic design, and inadequate preventive maintenance. Muri is another form of friction. Imai also discusses tools like 5S-CANDO (CANDO = clearing up, arranging, neatness, discipline, and ongoing improvement). 5S-CANDO is another tool for reducing friction. Imai discusses Just-in-Time (JIT) as a tool for reducing inventory and improving product flow. Readers of Eliyahu Goldratt and Jeff Cox's "The Goal" will appreciate this section. Synchronous flow manufacturing (SFM) is treated in detail in "Leading the Way to Competitive Excellence: The Harris Mountaintop Case Study". The idea of JIT/SFM is to produce goods in response to customer demand, not to keep people and equipment busy. Imai discussess a mattress factory that uses this approach: it not only keeps inventory down, but it can offer far more product lines. Gemba -- Place where action happens

As a practitioner and instructor of lean and six sigma, I recommend this book a lot. Gemba is a vitally important concept that often gets overlooked or gets overshadowed by our data, especially in an increasingly e-driven world. Gemba Kaizen is especially useful for engineers and supervisors, who may not have extensive TPS experience, who need a practical guide for applying lean principals in their workplace. It has a nice glossary at the beginning. It has good sections on visual management (5S) and standard work. In addition to the 10 Rules for Gemba Kaizen, the following Imai quote is one of my favorites: "A lack of the five S's in gemba indicates inefficiency, muda, insufficient self-discipline, low moral, poor quality, high costs, and an inability to meet delivery terms."

Brief and to the Point

This is a delightful little book that provides important insights into how an organization can be successful by continuously looking at improving its operations, enhance efficiencies and refining operations. This would result in improved quality, productivity and ultimately profit for an organization but without the upheavals and pain associated with the likes of business process reengineering which is advocated by some people.

The author advocates the adoption of lean manufacturing principles, just-in-time processes, and Kanban, which should result in increased company profitability without adversely impacting employee morale and trust. The concepts highlighted in the book are well-known and the author consolidates these in a small book that makes easy and fast reading and a convenient reference guide for practitioners.

The book is recommended reading for managers involved in the implementation of lean manufacturing and Kaizen principles.
