A registered engineer in several states, he is an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, and the Solid Waste Association of North America.

well worth the money

I'm reading the 5 th edition and find it useful as a Building Construction Engineer. I particularily like the upfront material on project planning. The book is not overly simplistic, nor unnecssarily complicated. It refers the reader to other sources that are useful tools as well. There is a mound of material since the book exceed 1000 pages. I highly recommend this book for a practicing professional or a greenhorn in the ICI building construction industry. I wouldn't pay $1000 for the book, but it is cetrainly worth a couple of hundred dollars.

serves a niche between civil engr handbooks and architecture references

This is a technical handbook that provides design and construction info for general building construction, especially commercial design.

While so much of civil engr handbooks concerns civil works and structures, this handbook is complementary. It has excellent summaries that are organized along 16 categories used in modern U S commercial building codes. For example, its sections on roofing systems, HVAC, electrical systems, etc. would not be found in civil engr handbooks nor covered as thoroughly in architectural handbooks.
The 2001 edition, purchased in 2004, was a bargain at less than $50.

Useful, but much of the information is outdated.

I bought this book for review for BCE exams. The later chapters are a good overview, but double check for updated information. Things have changed since this book was published in 1993. Skip the morphology, physiology and systematics chapters entirely, Gullan & Cranston's "The Insects" is a much better source for that information.

The book's long history shows in this edition, font sizes change randomly and many illustrations depict insect distributions from the 1950s. A full overhaul and update to this text would be immensely valuable.

Good as a basic textbook and a source of solve problems

This book is intended to assist upper level undergraduate and graduate students in their understanding of differential geometry, which is the study of geometry using calculus. Usually students study differential geometry in reference to its use in relativity. I personally have a rather oddball application for the subject - modeling of curved geometry for computer graphics applications. The fundamental concepts are presented for curves and surfaces in three-dimensional Euclidean space to add to the intuitive nature of the material.

The book presumes very little in the way of background and thus starts out with the basic theory of vectors and vector calculus of a single variable in the first two chapters. The following three chapters discuss the concept and theory of curves in three dimensions including selected topics in the theory of contact.

Great care is given to the definition of a surface so that the reader has a firm foundation in preparation for further study in modern differential geometry. Thus, there is some background material in analysis and in point set topology in Euclidean spaces presented in chapters 6 and 7. The definition of a surface is detailed in chapter eight. Chapters 9 and 10 are devoted to the theory of the non-intrinsic geometry of a surface. This includes an introduction to tensor methods and selected topics in the global geometry of surfaces. The last chapter of the outline presents the basic theory of the intrinsic geometry of surfaces in three-dimensional Euclidean space.

Exercises are primarily in the form of proofs, and there are plenty of worked examples. Since the examples are kept to no more than three dimensions, the outline contains plenty of good instructive diagrams that illustrate key concepts. This Schaum's outline has quite a bit of instruction in it past the bare required minimum, but you might still want a good primary textbook. My personal favorite is Pressley's "Elementary Differential Geometry". Overall I find this to be a very good outline and source of solved problems on the subject and I highly recommend it.

A practical elementary introduction to classical differential geometry

Many years after its publication, this book continues to be a valuable introduction to the differential geometry (DG) of curves and surfaces in the euclidean 3-dimensional space R^3. The text is clear and suitable for self study, since each chapter combines a serious bulk of theory and many solved exercises, as well as some unsolved problems. The work starts reviewing much of the differential calculus needed. Then, it deals with curves, defining curvature and torsion, and proving the Frenet-Serret equations. It is shown that every regular curve is detrmined by its curvature and torsion (up to a rigid motion). Many interesting problems on curves illustrate the theory. But little attention is given to plane curves and no global property of curves is given (what is quite understandable, since they are hard to prove). The book continues with surfaces, defining parametrizations, atlas, the tangent plane and the differential of a map of surfaces. Then, we find an excellent introductory exposition of curvature lines and assymptotic lines (including Meusnier, Euler, Rodrigues and Beltrami-Enneper theorems) as well as geodesic curvature, geodesic lines and Gauss curvature. The so called fundamental existence and unicity theorems for curves and surfaces in R^3 are stated and proved, as well as Gauss Theorema Egregium. However, there is no mention of parallel transport (you can find this in Stoker Differential Geometry (Wiley Classics Library), in Goetz Introduction to Differential Geometry (Addison-Wesley Series in Mathematics), in Millman-Parker Elements of Differential Geometry's, in do Carmo's Differential Geometry of Curves and Surfaces or in Klingenberg's A Course in Differential Geometry (Graduate Texts in Mathematics), all of them introductory books on DG too. The book also treats the simplest global properties of surfaces: (1) orientability (mildly presented), (2) Liebmann's theorem characterising compact connected surfaces of constant curvature in R^3 as spheres ( clearly proved, without assuming its orientabilty), (3) Gauss-Bonnet theorem, proved in a rather sketchy way, but well illustrated in some exercises, which clarify its meaning and difficulty. In general, many theoretical properties are proved as exercises. Practical questions are easy or not too hard to solve. If you really don't know the subject, this book is a perfect start, alone or combined with those previously cited works, or with Struik's classical Lectures on Classical Differential Geometry: Second Edition, Oprea's Differential Geometry and its Applications (Classroom Resource Materials) (Mathematical Association of America Textbooks), or Montiel-Ros' Curves and Surfaces (Graduate Studies in Mathematics). Other problem books on the DG of curves and surfaces are rare. I will mention (1) Fedenko's (Mir Editions, now re-edited by USSR (sic!) editions-Moscow) (similar to M. Lipschutz's level, but much less detailed and with no theory). (2) Mishchenko-Solovyev-Fomenko (Problems in DG and Topology, Mir- Moscow).

Slightly Subpar for Mathematical Topics in the Schaum Outline Series

While the few solved problems have been carefully selected, and the topics covered continue to reflect Martin Lipschultz normal high standards of exposition, overall this volume is a sub par effort for topics in this series.

The problem lies with the progression of topics, and the erratic treatment -- both of which seem to lack rhyme or reason and leaves the reader with no sense of continuity or cohesion to the substance: Why not, for instance, have "vectors" and "vector functions of a real variable," followed by "vector functions of a vector variable?" And why throw topology right into the middle of this mix? Was it only to get to the idea of Homeomorphisms? If so, should this not have been done much earlier on in the book, maybe even as early as the very first chapter, providing a smoother transition to vector functions of higher mathematical forms? Or better yet, perhaps the author should have merely mentioned the importance of elementary topology, in passing, and then referred the reader to an introductory topology textbook, or as a last resort, he could have added topology as an appendix? But not just toss it in the middle unexpectedly without explanation in an almost completely disconnected fashion. This smattering of topology just seemed so much out of place here. And in any case, it surely was insufficient to tie down the concepts needed to build the necessary bridge between topology and differential geometry. Yes, it did help in understanding the parametric representations of surfaces, but the reader still "was on his own" and had to hustle mightily to make the intended connections.

As well, throughout the book, the lurching back and forth leaves the reader without any sense of coherence on which to build confidence in either the theory of these many complex topics, or problem-solving in the field of differential geometry, more generally. Thus I would argue at the very least that this volume should be relabeled "Selected Topics in Differential Geometry," or better yet "Eclectic Topics in Differential Geometry.'

Its real merit is as a supplement only: neither as a text, nor as a robust basis for developing skills beyond the basics for solving problems in Differential Geometry.

Still, since there is so little basic material available in the field, this remains a useful, even if not an entirely valuable, resource. Three stars.

Highly recommended!

I'm working in the Aerospace industry and for me there are only two books on the subject that I use for unclassified reference litterature - this book and "Rocket Propulsion Elements" by C. Sutton.

This book covers almost everything on the preliminary design level of a rocket propulsion system. Except for the typing errors this book is perfect. And I can surely recommend it for students as well as professionals.

A "Must Have" in any Aerospace Professional's Library

This book is THE definitive work on rocket and space propulsion. Unlike any other textbook on the subject, this text permits you to start with a blank sheet of paper and literally design a propulsion system from the ground up that meets user requirements. You can then assess the overall system performance. Highly recommended. If you are going to purchase any book on this topic - I recommend you start with this one!

Excellent Reference

This book is excellent for Aerospace Engineering students and engineers alike. Contains plenty of graphs, tables, and "back-of-the-napkin" equations.

I wouldn't recommend this so much as a "learning the concepts" text book,as it doesnt always explain the data it is present very well. However for those already familiar with the topics covered it provides excellent reference.

An outstanding book but obsolete plans!

This is an excellant book. Very educational and inspiring. The only problem I can see is that you do need to buy the plans to build the boats and unless you can loft the plans that are printed in the book, plans for these three kayaks are no longer available. "The New Kayak Shop" also by Chris Kulczycki is virtually the same book with not so much "three more" boats you can build but the improved versions of this books boats. In other words it replaces this book. Unless you are a dyed in the wool bookaholic like myself, just buy "The New Kayak Shop". Plans and kits are available for those boats and that combined with the quality of instruction from the book practically guarantees a high quality kayak at a very low price along with builders bragging rights.

Essential Reading for Stitch and Glue Kayak Builders

If you have ever considered building your own sea kayak, The Kayak Shop is required reading. The author clearly and effectively describes the steps involved in building these simple but elegant boats. It covers everything from materials and tools, to painting and varnishing tips and everything in between. The book is also nicely illustrated with photographs demonstrating specific building techniques. After reading this book, I built my own stitch and glue kayak from one of the author's kits. I referenced The Kayak Shop constantly during the process.

Alternative to strip or canvas covered kayaks

There are about four books out by the same publisher on the subject of building your own kayaks. This one I read while building the one by G. Putz.
In the home garage, you can make strip kayaks or covered frame boats. This particular book describes a way of boat-building that is popular in parts of Europe - stitched marine plywood. I'd never heard of this before; the practice of sewing two halves of a hull together with wire and then applying a resilient epoxy.
It appears that this is an excellent way to make a kayak efficiently and with less effort than the other types. Another advantage is space on the interior for storage and leg-room which the frame boats do not afford. Also, these look NICE. Had I not started on a canvas number, I would have made one of these.
Very well written, lots of detail. The author clearly has a lot of experience building these things. You could easily follow along like a cookbook's recipe - nicely done.

Creating the right mind-set for strategy formulation

Kenichi Ohmae was Chairman of the Japan office of McKinsey & Company, the world-famous strategy consulting firm. He has been described as "Mr. Strategy" and has written several books and articles on strategy-related topics.
Kenichi Ohmae believes that successful business strategies do not result from rigorous analysis but from a particular state of mind. "In what I call the mind of the strategist, insight and consequent drive for achievement, often amounting to a sense of mission, fuel a thought process which is basically creative and intuitive rather than rational." He uses theoretical knowledge from the various academic scholars and puts them in its place - "a place distinctly secondary to creative intuition in the tool kit of the successful strategist." The book split up in three parts, each consisting of 5 to 7 chapters.
In Part I - The Art of Strategic Thinking, the author concentrates on the basics of the mental process. In Chapter 1 - Analysis: The Starting Point, Ohmae introduces the strategic thinking process. He introduces various useful diagrams and flow processes for a more reliable recipe for success: "the combination of analytical method and mental elasticity that I call strategic thinking." In the chapters 2 to 6, the author explores the different directions the strategic thinker can pursue in quest of innovative strategies. In the final chapter of Part I, Ohmae explains how the right mindset for strategic thinking and how to develop the required strategy.
In Part II - Building Successful Strategies, Ohmae shifts his focus from process to content. "In the construction of any business strategy, three main players must be taken into account: the corporation itself, the customer, and the competition." He refers to them as the three C's or the strategic triangle. Within the next three chapters, Ohmae discusses the strategies based on those three C's: (1) "Customer-based strategies are the basis of all strategy. ... There is no doubt that a corporation's foremost concern ought to be the interest of its customers rather than that of its stockholders and other parties. In the long run, the corporation that is genuinely interested in its customers is the one that will be interesting to investors." (2) "Corporate-based strategies are functional. Their aim to maximize the corporation's strenghts relative to the competition in the functional areas that are critical to success in the industry." (3) "Competitor-based strategies can be constructed by looking at possible sources of differentiation in functions ranging from purchasing, design, and engineering to sales and servicing. The main point to remember is that any difference between you and your competitors must be related to one or more of the three elements that jointly determine profit: price, volume, and cost." In the final chapter of Part II, Ohmae discusses corporate strategy. He claims that corporate strategy needs to address two issues: First, the integration between the individual business and the total corporation. And second, should there be a corporate strategy that is different from the individual business.
Part III - Modern Strategic Realities discusses the environmental factors influencing strategy thinking and strategy formulation. The chapters in this part are not as much related to each other as the previous parts. Ohmae identifies and discusses five economic trends that have an impact on long-term business strategies, whereby he notes that the strategic thinker needs to take those trends into consideration when shaping strategies. Due to those economic trends, seven major changes are ongoing in a global perspective. Ohmae discusses those seven changes in a very interesting chapter 14. In the next chapter, the author discusses the various myths and realities about Japan products and Japanese companies, and discusses the four main differences between Japanese and Western companies. This chapter provides some great insights into Japanese strategic and business thinking. In Chapter 16, Ohmae tackles strategic decision making. Ohmae believes that founders of successful businesses do not simply gamble. In his opinion entrepreneurs follow a five-step process for successful, foresighted management decision making: (1) Clear definition of the business domain. (2) Logical hypothesis based on an extrapolation of forces at work in the business environment. (3) Focus on a few strategic options, instead of many, open to the business. (4) The company must pace its strategy and not overreach itself. (5) Management must be prepared to change the basic direction of the business, if conditions demand it. Each of these five steps are discussed in detail. In the final chapter of the book, the author discusses strategy formulation: "... to bring insight to fruition as a successful strategy takes method, mental discipline, and plain hard work." He also discusses the creativity required for the development of business strategy.
Yes, I do like this book. And yes, I do find it difficult to write a review about it. This book is not a guide or framework into Japanese strategic thinking. In fact, Ohmae only really spends one chapter on the difference between Japanese and Western business systems. It is more about the right mind-set for strategy formulation and strategy development. There are some great lines in this book, and the various figures, diagrams and sketches are extremely useful. I wish that I had read this book several years ago as it gives great insights into the strategy process and development. But again, this book is not a guide or framework. It is an excellent complement to books such Porter's 'Competitive Strategy' (1980) and 'Competitive Advantage' (1985). Highly recommended to anybody interested in strategic management and strategy development/process. The authors uses a very simple US-English writing style.

The main thing I captured from the book is: strategic thinking is a way of life, not a special time event. Working in a US multinational for years, I am more and more aware of the facts and success path defined by Mr. Ohmae - McKinsey guru. Especially, determining the strategic degrees of freedom of any issue (can be a business issue, or a weekend tennis journey, or even life -I applied-) and determining the actions to take to get the determined result is the best thing I learned.
This is a short book (wrt to other strategic management books) but it teaches how to think instead of popular strategy methods.
It is a must read & can be taken as foreword of all business books.

Last week I received an identical request from two sources to recommend a good book on business strategy. One is a first year MBA student and another a senior executive in a large multinational. Without hesitation, I recommended this book.
Strategy has been a subject matter of interest to Business and Military than to any other profession. In both these cases it is a about doing something differently to gain advantage over the adversary either in the battlefield or in the marketplace. Strategy is not just a piece of paper or a corporate manual but a state of the mind to win against all odds. So many books and theories have been written on this subject and still it continues to be a topic that cannot be defined as an exact science. If there is one topic that can be listed as the most important for any MBA program, undoubtedly it is Business Strategy.
Another reason for revisiting this book is that in the last decade, we have been overloaded with concepts of digitization and technology as the main drivers of business. We have seen technologies that are excellent but have failed miserably in the marketplace. Technocrats have failed to convert bits and bytes into bucks. In the quest for technical excellence, strategy has taken a back seat. We need to fill this vacuum of strategic thinking.
But then the problem is to have a strategy to understand and apply this vital topic ! It is here that this book is one among the best I have come across till date.
Strategy is a combination of elastic thinking and application of analytical method. Omahe explains this well and warns that strategy is not just somebody's spark of genius but a process that needs rigorous effort and continuos refinement. He brings in the framework of listing the concrete phenomena, grouping, abstraction and determination of approach that are actionable and practical. The three Cs' of the strategic triangle - Corporation, Customer and Competitor are at the core of this book. Each C is discussed in detail with excellent illustrations and case studies.
If you need to read an executive summary, I recommend Chapter 7 - The Secret of Strategic Vision. In this chapter one paragraph in my opinion contains the essence of strategic thinking.
"Strategic thinking in business must break out of the limited scope of vision that entraps deer on the highway. It must be backed by the daily use of imagination and by constant training in logical thought process. Success must be summoned; it will not come unbidden and unplanned. Top management and its corporate planners cannot base their day-to-day work on blind optimism and apply strategic thinking only when confronted by unexpected obstacles. They must develop the habit of thinking strategically, and must do it as a matter of course. Ideally, they must approach it with real enthusiasm as a stimulating mental exercise."
The book was first published in 1982. Hence some of the assumptions on key economic trends under "Modern Strategic Realities" have undergone major corrections. However, the framework for strategic thinking still holds good. Though the examples are mostly from Japanese companies, Omahe concludes the book by pointing out that " Creativity, mental productivity and the power of strategic insight know no national boundaries. Fortunately for all of us, they are universal."
