Jeffrey T. Luftig is president of Luftig & Warren International in Southfield, Michigan, which develops and delivers training and consulting services in the Quality Sciences to businesses and industries throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia. Clients have included Alcoa, BF Goodrich, Hughes Aircraft, IBM, Ford Motor Company, and Motorola. A prolific author and lecturer, Dr. Luftig is the former Associate Dean of the College of Technology and Director of the Technology Services Center at Eastern Michigan University. He is a past recipient of the Endowed Chair for Research, Development, and Training in the Quality Sciences, funded by Ford Motor Company’s Electrical and Electronics Division. Victoria S. Jordan, a Certified Quality Engineer, is a senior staff associate at Luftig & Warren International, Inc., where she assists service and manufacturing companies in implementing Total Quality, including strategic planning and policy deployment. She also provides management and consulting training to Fortune 500 companies implementing TQM. A former quality assurance manager at General Electric, Mrs. Jordan is a senior member and past section chairperson of the American Society for Quality Control and past chairman of the program committee of the Nashville Quality Forum.

Great Practical Resource for Industrial Experimentation

The previous reviewer missed the point...this book is not intended to be a book about what experimental design is. It is intended make it easy for the practitioner of industrial statistics to take all the fancy tools they have learned and use them in a real environment. The "endless checklists" are a redeeming feature, as they make industrial experimentation much easier by noting common pitfalls and doing a lot of the paperwork development for you. In my experience, the most common failure in the industrial application of statistics is not the use of the statistical tools, but in a failure of the logistics of the experiment. This book will help you avoid these issues.
This book bridges the gap between knowing the statistical tools and applying them in real life.
That said, the first edition of the book contains many egregious editing errors, so it is frustrating at times.

Misses the point

One of these reviewers misses the point entirely. The worst DOE's are designed by statisticians alone , the best are designed with subject matter experts AND a statistician. It is only those that have suffered the curse of an "expert only" and a "statistician only" that feel the way you do. The technical stuff is trivial, the expert matter is critical, which is what Luftig and Jordan are trying to put together, and to help the academics realize. There IS a process! Get the research question in focus, and go from there. Sounds like you have never actually approached a problem from a realistic point of view in your life (or ran any "real" experiments).

If you are looking for a book that delivers countless pages of set-up forms and checklists than maybe this book is for you. It focuses mainly on the project management aspect and lightly skims actual DOE philosophy. If you are looking for a text that delivers real information about designed experiments and analysis of experiments there are many others out there that cover these FAR better.

Had I known that more than half of this anthology is nothing but hunters bragging about how they shot already wounded animals, I still would have bought this book for the other excellent stories, including the hippo & croc ones but most notably Lion Attack! ("[W]ith the incredible bravery of the desperate, [Lee] threw himself on the lioness barehanded, punching and scratching to make the big cat drop his wife") and I Will Save You! ("Running toward [his wife's] Vina's screams...[Elfas] smacked the lioness over the back until the broom handle splintered."). As for (most of) the hunters, however, the braggadocio of their 'exploits' left me rooting for the animals!

A book you can sink your teeth into

This collection of true stories of animal attacks is a rip-roaring read from beginning to end. As Sherlock Holmes said (in not so many words), our fear of the wilderness is greater than our fear of the city. John Long's collected stories verify that in horrifying detail.
Imagine being on your own in the wilderness and hearing the "woof woof" of a grizzly somewhere behind you, or on an open plain in Africa, knowing there are lions are all around you.
The people in these true tales survive, which is even more horrifying. Lions gnawing on brains, crocodiles clamping down between legs, jaguars thrashing from person to person, tearing out jugulars -- all slendidly recounted.
Not a book for the faint, but a must for those in search of tales of adventure and survival.

This is an outstanding book despite being over 10 years old. The clarity of the text and examples is far superior to the average text. One of the few books I have been able to easily learn new material from without having the benefit of a class to attend.

The book contains many useful reference tables and descriptive graphs and illustrations as well as all the standard equations and calculation methods. The book also gives tables and empirical equations in both Imperial and SI units.
The indented audience for the book is a professional engineer and may be beyond the general reader.

This book is one of the few books that introduced me to Water Resources Engineering as a student and I am still using it more than twenty years later as a University teacher and a Professional Consultant!
It contains some hydrology, some probability, some engineering economy, and some water resources planning to supplement the material on hydraulic machines and structures, water resources projects such as hydropower, wastewater treatment, irrigation, river engineering/navigation, flood damage mitigation, and water supply. It also has worked examples, exercises, and useful tables.
This book does not overload you with verbosity. It just gives you enough to make a topic sufficiently clear for one to proceed with using the same in real situations.

Revisionist Junk History Disguised as a Textbook

Bad history is one thing. Bad history that is put into textbook form is even worse. Lafeber is one of those revisionist historians who love to talk about the big bad US and the poor Russians and the misunderstood Stalin. This book as with most revisionist history is an attempt to justify some sort of left-wing political agenda. Just read how the book makes Henry Wallace into some sort of hero while Harry Truman is made into a villian. This book often ignores the facts and current documentary evidence. For good cold war history read Gaddis, or Ferrell not this!

A decent survey book

I had to buy this book for a Cold War class during my masters program. It is a fairly thin book considering all that went on the Cold War but this is just meant to be a light survey of the Cold War years. To tell of the major events to people who may not be familiar with them. I did not think of it as having a very liberal bent to it like the previous reviewer. It is a little more liberal than other books out there but that is bound to happen. Just as there are more conservative leaning books written about the cold war. I recommend this book for anyone who is taking a class on the Cold War and needs some background information on it. It is easy to read and get through and tells of the major points in the Cold War between Russia and America.

An excellent survey of superpower relations

LaFeber's book certainly deserves its place in the canon of Cold War scholarship. The writing is concise, accessible, and witty, while the scholarship is excellent. This book will be invaluable to anyone looking for an introduction to superpower relations in the Cold War era.
I must admit I am surprised to find LaFeber's work attacked from the "left" by the esteemed reviewer from Edgewood, Washington. After all, LaFeber has received criticism almost exclusively from the right. It is true, as the reviewer points out, that the book does not deal extensively with the Third World aspects of the Cold War. That is because the title of the book is not "The Complete History of the Cold War," but rather "America, Russia, and the Cold War."
The reviewer from Washington's heart is certainly in the right place. I agree that the Cold War was often experienced as a "Hot War" by the Southern Hemisphere. But LaFeber's book explicitly examines the United States and the Soviet Union during this era. The Third World civil wars and insurgencies of this period were seldom directly related to U.S.-Russian relations. The reviewer's examples of Vietnam and Nicaragua are good ones, but they are misplaced. He is aiming his barbs at the wrong historian. True, Noam Chomsky has led the effort to recognize Third World suffering in the Cold War era. But so has Walter LaFeber. I refer you especially to Inevitable Revolutions.

Plausible theory, good science.

Excellent photographs and maps illustrate this study of the volcanic island Thera (Santorini) which erupted circa 1470 BCE and destroyed the Minoan civilization, wreaking havoc throughout the Mediterranian world. Archaeology is made interesting and accessable to interested readers in this thoroughly researched and well written book.

A wonderfully objective book about a greatly distorted subject

With reference to the concept of Atlantis, never has so much drivel been written with reference to a relatively easily explained event. Most of it is ordinary garden fertilizer composed of supposition, unsupportable hypotheses, and outright fantasy. This book is not of that genre, and is highly recommended to the SERIOUS student of archeology.

Simply put, it is painfully clear that the tale of Atlantis has its origin in a Krakatoan-style Bronze Age eruption of the Thera (Santorini) volcano in the Cyclades volcanic island arc in the Southern Aegean Sea. This event took place somewhere between 3,450 and 3,650 years ago. The eruption was extremely violent, causing huge tsunamis and tremendous amounts of volcanic ashfall. The eruptiont utterly anninhilated the habitable nature of the volcanic island and left a huge, deep, water-filled caldera in its place. The volcano is still actice and has formed a new island in the center of the caldera's bay. Excellent black and white photos depict 20th century activity.

The book's text is well-written, well-organized, and easily understood. After reviewing the geology of the area, the authors show the nature of the Minoan civilization on Crete that was destroyed by the eruption and its after effects. One of the most interesting facets of the book is the discussion of Akrotiri, a city on Thera Island that was buried by ashfall from the eruption. The city is well preserved, and the photographs of the site, and the artifacts found there, are truly remarkable. It appears thaat the volcano gave considerable waarning of the impending cataclysm, since no skeletons or truly pried possessions have been found.

The authors present their case in a non-argumentative fashion, relying on demonstrative evidence, and skillfully interweave their finding with Plato's tale of Atlantis given some 900 years later. Any objective reader cannot be other than convinced that the so-called "riddle" of Atlantis has been solved without undue strain, or reliance on the wholly incredible.

The only consideration keeping the book from a five-star rating is its age, since it was published in 1969. Of course, much more information about the events discussed above has since been found. However, none of the subsequent discoveries have called the text of this book into question Instead, they have only reinforced it.

This book will show you what was Atlantis, how it was destroyed and how the myths arose. It will disprove the "theories" about Atlantis being in Bimini, Japan, Wisconsin, and Lord only knows where else. The reader of this book will get the unvarnished truth and be well-informed on an ancient geological ctastrophe that affects us even today. Finally, the reader will enjoy reaching that status.

The book is no longer published, but it is one of the best bargains you will ever get off a used book list. Buy it, enjoy it, and don't loan it out.

This textbook is now available in second edition, as of the fall of 1999. The second edition is significantly updated, with more references to the impact of technology on communication between the sexes and more attention paid to issues surrounding diversity. A new, highly provocative chapter has been included on power abuses in human relationships. Three main topics--sexual harassment, sexual assault and dating rape, and partner violence--are the focus of this chapter.

GREAT BOOK - MUST READ FOR SERIOUS PILOTS

Excellent book and a useful outline for self evaluation. Stories used to illustrate the points are, for the most part, well written and also appear to be well researched. I gave it only 4 stars because it seemed to suffer from a mild case of political correctness. Examples - According to other sources the F-14 loss of control on departure accident which took 5 lives had a tie to the push to get Carla Hultgreen and her fellow F-14 pilots thru training. The doomed pilot of this airplane was rated below standards, but above the female pilots in the same squadron and thus allowed to continue. The discussion of the Ron Brown crash places a lot of blame on the squadron leadership for sending the aircraft on a mission in violation of regs. However, the major breakdown was the failure of Air Force leadership to tell the State and Commerce Dept that if you expect us to fly with this primitive nav equipement don't expect service to all these airports and the President and Congress who in their rush to cut defense spending put these aircraft on the line. Perhaps a discussion of the fact that the female officer in command may have felt some special pressure to complete the mission was warranted. Another minor complaint is that more details would help in understanding the issues surounding some of the crashes . For example if the reported weather is included then stating the applicable minimums, rather than just saying the weather was below minimums would have been helpful. Beyond these few issues this is an excellent read.

If you are a pilot it is an excellent gift to a younger pilot.

Not Just for Pilots

It is a shame this book is out of print at this time. I am a commercial pilot and a physician. This book was introduced to me as a part of my recuring flight training. Ultimately, the themes made me redefine my medical practice as well. I have shared this book with dozens of people, pilots and non-pilots alike. Tony Kern has touched a fundamental theme by defining rogue behaviour, including rogue behavior by individuals and by organizations. Fellow pilots understand the themes easily. Other people, including fellow physicians, have privately told me that they fundamentally changed their practice procedures as a result of reading this book. One non-pilot told me that I had "saved his life" by suggesting that he read this book. Contemplative people, involved in aviation or not, will do soul searching as a result of reading this book. Rogues will be angry (as could be expected from the basic tenants of rogue behavior). Almost all will recognize rogue tendancies in their own behavior and will confront a decision to make corrective actions or to continue. This is not a book with a lot of confusing technical jargon. I highly recommend that you read this book if you get a chance.

I hope that demand will bring a new printing.

Darker, disturbing hues

Mr. Kern has suceeded in bringing to the forefront what I consider one of the greatest challenges to aviation: the rogue, undisciplined pilot. Rogues will continue to be a source of danger not only to themselves but their crews, passengers and people on the ground and this book should be required reading for everyone with a certificate (and even those who aren't pilots). Kudos to Mr. Kern for an eye-opening look at this threat.

Full Revision Needed

In view of the fact that "Ideal for self-study!" is one of the Schaum's milestone assertions, one could expect that those kinds of books are fully revised before being published. Unfortunately, it seems they are not. Nasar's book sounds interesting, but it has too many errors. This is of no help for those who want to prepare a subject by their own. I recommend not to buy this 1989 edition.

Ok for review of power systems, However many typo's or errors. If I was Mr Syed A. Nasar I would be embarrased to have my name on this book. In the first chapter alone there are more than 10 errors. If anyone knows where to find the McGraw Hill errata page for this manual please post the URL, it will be a great service. If I find it I'll repost.

Good coverage of a subject most EE's don't study any more

I agree with everyone else who says that the number of errors in numerical calculations are unacceptable in this book. That is too bad, because if that problem was rectified this would be a great little overview of a topic not really taught to Electrical Engineering undergraduates anymore - power and power calculations. Most EE's that graduate today are more signal processing or computer engineers than pure electrical engineers, and being able to work with power if you stay on the technical end of things long enough is bound to come up.

The math is really all over the map in this book - many calculations only require basic math, others involve calculus, still others involve iterative numerical methods. In fact, chapter eight is pretty much dedicated to the subject of numerical methods. The author at least hits the high points of all aspect of power systems. There is a great deal of material on transmission lines as well as the calculations involved when working with underground cables. One chapter is dedicated to fault calculations and discusses how the operation of a power system departs from normal after the occurrence of a fault. Chapter seven develops general solution methods that are amenable to the computer solution of power system network problems. Later in the outline, the author gets into subjects involving heavier power including a good introduction to three-phase power. A final and very short chapter discusses how to protect equipment against abnormal currents and voltages. The author does a good job of introducing the reader to all of the symbols that you are likely to see on a power system diagram, and their meanings.

In spite of the errors in the numerical calculations, I'd still say it's a good buy for the price. You're not going to find a good book that even touches these subjects for under a hundred dollars. If the errors were cleaned up, this Schaum's outline would be an invaluable classic.
