If I would be required to describe this book (I refer to the 1974 edition) I would describe it as 'insightful'. Instead of just providing a comprehensive overwies of mathematical statistics (which accomplished the book by the way) it provides interpretations and explanations why definitions are introduces, theorems are stated, certain concepts are needed. As such it is definetely no cook book but allows you to gain deep insights into the (certainly non-trivial) matter.

The type setting is fine considered the fact it is quite old. I wish there would be a new edition just to make sure that this book we be available for all how want to learn from it.

There are many book available on this topic (mathematical statistics) however this one is especially well suited as a first book. Many other book are way more demanding and or explain the concepts to a lesser degreen than a beginner may need.

In my opinion this is really a great book that makes joy reading. Great job!

An excellent introduction

This is an excellent book that does a great job of introducing the reader to the theory of statistics. The great thing about this textbook is that it takes you from square one to a pretty high level. There are a lot of examples which are included and the solutions are clear. It should be noted though that this is a book about mathematical statistics, and therefore it is not a cook book. The authors motivate the material, but there is a lot of math. However, the prerequisites are very basic (one year of calculus). By reading this book you will end up understanding the material instead of just memorizing the equation of a binomial distribution for example. I took off one star for two reasons. First, there are no answers to selected problems. I think that this is not acceptable for a textbook. I am not asking for the solutions, only the final answers to make sure that the work that I have done is correct. Second, the book barely mentions the topic of combinatorial analyses even though it (the book) does not suppose prior knowledge of probability. I think that this (minor) gap should be filled by including a small chapter on the topic at the start of the book, or at least as an appendix. Other than that, I highly recommend this book to everyone, even those studying social sciences. Most research methods will require you to understand the material in this book.

Handbook of Practical Electrical Design

The McGraw-Hill cover misrepresents this book. It may preach to the choir but makes no converts. Concepts are long, obscure or ignored. The print is tight and some tables are not legible in places. The reader will learn little. Pedagogy is not the authors' strength. Having learned the basics of electricity in school I hoped for some of what the publisher promises, but was very dissappointed and 60 bucks poorer. Avoid my mistake.

I haven't spent too much time in the book. The 2 times I referenced it I was not impressed. I think it is geared more towards a beginner Engineer that has little knowledge of electrical systems and more of a colligate background dealing with electrical theory.The book seemed old and outdated. You would be better off with just a NEC Hankbook.

No, it did not. We submitted a request to return it, but never heard anything back from the store it came from...we won't be doing that again. The book was written by an electrician...definitely not a PE.

This book cover all aspects of intelligent agents

Being the broad-scope work that it is, this book has hit the bulls-eye in terms of coverage. While there have been other books on IAs recently, this one covers all aspects of IAs.
Doing so, it has more positives than negatives; but of course this depends on whether you want an overview of the field, or an Intelligent Agent (IA) in "C" programming reference manual. It is more of the former than the latter.
It does cover a lot of ground and gives one a detailed taste for what artificial intelligence(AI), and IA's (Intelligent Agents) created from AI technologies are, and more importantly, what they *could* be. That is, if all the suggestions in this book were followed, we might soon have really 'intelligent' software emerging from various quarters (like the Internet or Intranets).
It concentrates on explaining the essentials of the cognitive and computer sciences that are relevant to IA design and creation, especially the considerations that seem to have contributed to 'intelligence' in the natural world (like our brains). I liked all the various definitions of intelligence!
It goes into the details of various architectural approaches to designing systems of interacting, or collaborating components. I found the material on the necessity of common agent languages (that is, languages in which the agents speak to each other) to be particularly enlightening.
Also especially useful was all the information about autonomy, agent mobility, standards that agents can make use of (like IIOP), and what languages and environments might be particularly suited to IA implementation. There were a couple of subjects that seem, in retrospect, out of place (like OpenDoc). But given that the coverage is about certain architectural and implementation concepts of those subjects that were important to IAs, and that it was only a few pages, this was a minor issue with me.
The book explains, at a surface level, the common soft-computing technologies like ANNs, genetic computing and fuzzy logi! c, as well as more traditional approaches like expert systems. It gives examples of real software that you can buy and use to incorporate these techniques into agents. For example, the book provides a good synopsis of Cyc, which can be used by agents to incorporate 'common sense' reasoning capabilities.
I did not expect it, so I was not surprised that this was not a programming manual. There are a couple of other books on IAs that concentrate on particular kinds of relatively simple agents in particular languages. Yet, to be honest, in lieu of lots of specific code and examples of actual agents, it provides a lot of pointers to other researchers' works in companies and academic settings.
This book is much more than what has appeared on the market thus far. Its breadth is actually pretty amazing considering its length of around 400 pages. I would recommend it to anyone who wanted to either gain a good grounding in intelligent agent design and development issues, or to expand one's purview of how intelligence could be enabled within today's and tomorrow's distributed computer systems.

Kristin Thompson is an Honorary Fellow at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. She holds a master's degree in film from the University of Iowa and a doctorate in film from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. She has published Eisenstein's Ivan the Terrible (Princeton University Press, 1981), Exporting Entertainment: America's Place in World Film Markets, 1907-1934 (British Film Institute, 1985), Breaking the Glass Armor: Neoformalist Film Analysis (Princeton University Press, 1988), Wooster Proposes, Jeeves Disposes; or Le Mot Juste (James H. Heinman, 1992), Storytelling in the New Hollywood (Harvard University Press, 1999), Storytelling in Film and Television (Harvard University Press, 2003), and Herr Lubitsch Goes to Hollywood: German and American Film after World War I (University of Amsterdam, 2005). In her spare time she studies Egyptology. .

The authors have collaborated on Film History (McGraw-Hill, 1994) with Janet Staiger, on The Classical Hollywood Cinema (Columbia University Press, 1985) and Storytelling in the New Hollywood (Harvard University Press, 1999)..

David Bordwell is Jacques Ledoux Professor of Film Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He holds a master's degree and a doctorate from the University of Iowa. When a Text Book Is Worth Reading

It's hard to get excited about a textbook, but this one is the exception. Written as if for a trade audience, it tells the fascinating story of film from its beginnings to the present. Covers just about everything you would want to know, but as an engaging story. This is an example of what an authoritative study of a subject should look like: balanced, well written, exciting, and beautifully illustrated.

About the Author
John I. Levenhagen, P.E., is the author of several respected books on HVAC controls, including McGraw-Hill's HVAC Controls and Systems (1992), coauthored with Don Spethmann. A widely known lecturer and consultant in HVAC control design engineering, Mr. Levenhagen is a former member of the board of directors of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers. He has worked for a number of control firms, including Johnson Controls, where he was a market manager for a decade.

Only one thing I have to complain about is: all controls are pneumatic. With wide access to DDC controls today, I do not get it, why autor missed DDC systems. With DDC you can control HVAC equipment with greater precision and software is giving us so much flexibility.

Title should be "Air Handling Diagrams."

The book is very informative having the most diagrams of air handlers and VAV boxes I have seen in one source. Diagrams are fairly thorough with the inclusion of heating and cooling coils and "some" additional control features. I was hoping for more detail on the piping of heating and cooling coils with various control valve confirgurations. It is still an excellent book if you want to compare air handling configurations.

Becoming a bit out of date, but still a decent overview!

I had provided an earlier review of this book, so this is more
of an additional comment.
The copy I have is still one of the ones I start with to get a
basic overview of the subject matter. It is starting to get a
bit out of date, yes, but still a decent read. Again, it has some
grammatical errors (as pointed out by another reviewer), but
that is not essential to the content. Also, PCS was (and still
is to some degree) too "new" at the time this was written
to be included and this should not be held against the author.
As I have mentioned before, to dive into detail requires a copy
of the relevent standards (expensively available from Global
Engineering), so this kind of overview has a place on the shelf
- for quick basic checks, if nothing else!

An excellent overview of cellular communications

This is an excellent overview of the various cellular communication technologies in use today. The text has a good blend of general information about Analog AMPS, TDMA and CDMA, and also provides enough detail about each of these technologies to be very useful as an overview text (complete detail usually requires a perusal of the relevant EIA/TIA standards so I do not expect any text to provide that degree of information.) Please note I have only skimmed the radio and antenna sections of this book and cannot comment on those chapters.

The book is badly written and has huge gaps.

Prospective readers should heed the following warnings:
(1) The term "cellular" is used here in the restrictive sense that excludes the PCS band.
(2) The author may know his subject, but his grasp of English grammar and syntax is pathetic.
(3) Much of the material piled together here was already obsolete in the first edition, let alone the second.
