Mohinder L. Nayyar, P.E., ASME Fellow, is Senior Engineering Specialist for piping and valves in the engineering department of the Bechtel Power Corporation in Frederick, Maryland, and the Editor-in-Chief and an author of the sixth and seventh editions of the field-leading Piping Handbook. As a Bechtel consultant, he has assisted many leading companies, and has supervised and supported both nuclear- and fossil-fueled projects around the world. He is Chairman of the Materials Technical Committee of the ASME B31, Pressure Piping Code, and of Materials Group of ASME B31.1, Power Piping Code; a member of ASME B16 Main Committee; and several other standards committees. He lives in Brookeville, Maryland.

Excellent Book!

I have several books on dehydrating your own trail meals and this is easily the best. It is concise and full of good ideas and recipes. The guidance is flexible enough for the lightweight backpacker or for the canoe or pack mule traveler. For example, some of the recipes call for a dutch oven (too bulky and heavy for the lightweight backpacker) and others are suitable for a one pot meal (ideal for the lightweight backpacker).

A nice feature is the chart of drying temperatures and times for different foods. Also, the chart of calorie and protein content of different foods is important to making sure you get enough calories to keep going in the field and enough protein to keep your body from consuming your muscle tissue for fuel. There are also plans for building your own dehydrator for the do-it-yourselfer. The suggested one week meal plan is a good guide to get you started on packing for a trip.

The emphasis of this book is on drying individual ingredients and then rehydrating and combining them at meal time. This allows you to be more flexible in your meals, but takes a little longer at meal time. However, it also tells you how to use your own recipes to prepare a conmplete meal and then dehydrate it. Precooked spaghetti, rice or beans rehydrate and cook faster in the field. The book recommends having both types of meals with you for variety and flexibility. You can also dehydrate canned foods like vegetables or canned chicken, tuna or salmon and use them in your recipes.

This book is concise and a fast read, but packs a lot of information. This means that you need to pay attention to pick up all the important points. Fully half of the book gives infomration on dehydrating and meal planning as well as other important instructions and the other half gives some excellent recipes.

One important point (based on experience) is to be sure to try the recipes at home on the same stove and cooking utensels that you will have in the field. You want to make sure that you have everything you need and know how to use it BEFORE you are in the field and cold and wet and tired and hungry. That's not a good time to find out that you need another pot or that your pot isn't large enough to properly prepare your recipes!

"Trail Food" is all you need to dehydrate your own meals, but a few other general books on dehydrating wouldn't hurt to help you gain a full understanding of all the nuances of dehydrating.

straightforward drying advice

I've had this book for a few years now, and have read it cover to cover several times.It gives good advice on how to dry everything from plain vegetables to your leftover dinner.I even started to dehydrate my own eggs,and let me tell you they come back wonderfully.Great book that will have you tossing aside those $6.00 nasty premade meals.

Time was, drying food was a real pain and involved an old stove and a lot of attention. Now, with the proliferation of dryers on the market, anyone can dry, meat, fish, fruit and veg. The problem is that, in a lot of places, The how of drying is still a closely guarded secret.
No more. This is an excellent introduction to drying, and you don't need to be an expert to start either. Wanna dry? Get this book.

Demystifies Digital Computer Internals. Simply. Clearly.

After hearing about digital computers while in high school (this was mid 80s), I was extremely curious about understanding how these so called 'computers' work. The idea that they can make decisions, remember things etc. was simply fascinating. General popular science articles weren't clear enough to give the complete picture.

I was lucky to find a copy of this book in my school library. I took home this book, and simply read the book through the night. and what an experience it was!.

It builds on absolutely fundamental concepts, logical components, simple logic gates, the mysterious flip-flop, the universal gate, the ROM, and then on to the stored program computer.. the register, program counter, Arithmetic, Logic Unit, The Instruction Decoder. my..my. In such simple terms. and then on to,in fact, build a commercial microprocessor of the age, step by step.

One of those rare , simple elegant books, that can get you started and then hook us on to the subject.

Absolutely relevent today as well. since we still fundamentally use the same architecture, believe it or not.

Excellent Book On Bits, Bytes, Binary, Gates and Logic Design

Malvino has a way with words and manages to simplify many aspects of low level digital electronics. I'm about half-way through the book and already cherish it for its very thorough explanations, starting from the simplest aspects (bits) and working towards more sophisticated elements of circuit design (truth tables with Karnaugh Maps). Along the way you'll take in many lessons on Boolean algebra and simplification techniques (don't let this scare you away - it's really not bad at all).

While the book is definitely old, it's still very relevant, even with all of the improvements to computers over the last few decades. About the only possible complaint I could have at this point in the book is that some of the chapter review questions seem a bit tedious, particularly since we only have half the answers in the back so it's questionable whether those problems are worth doing since you can't confirm whether you correctly understand the material. That aside, there's lots of questions (with answers) along the way within the actual chapter content, so you still have lots of chances to confirm your understanding.

Bottom line, the book is a classic, the writing style is very easy to read, the quality of what it conveys is all-encompassing, and you'd be hard-pressed to find anything better on the subject. A must have for your electronics library.

This book contains useful information such as the different integral types and other useful math formulas found in calculus. If you are just taking calculus then I would recommend purchasing this book and then learning how to reference to it for the formulas you need.

Good portable reference for professionals or graduate students

This is a pretty helpful Schaum's outline, in that most of the mathematical tables and formulas that an undergraduate math student would need are included. Material from geometry, calculus, differential equations, numerical methods, special functions and transforms, and probability and statistics are included. Plus, there are some examples of how to perform some types of calculations. There is even a section on calculating compound interest and the value of an annuity for those students of financial mathematics. Also, it is much easier than lugging around the infamous 2600 page "CRC Handbook of Mathematics and Physics." Of course, there are tradeoffs. This book has mathematical tables and formulas only, there are no physics equations.

Generally, if you are an undergraduate student in math or science, your required textbook will have all of the equations and tables that your instructor would expect you to have committed to memory for exams. Thus I am not sure if it is worth the extra cost to buy this book too. I think this book would be most helpful for someone who is out of school who needs their undergraduate mathematics tables and formulas condensed and in one portable book that can be taken to work and stored at the office, rather than carrying around the dozen or so math texts you used during your undergraduate career. It would also be helpful for someone going to graduate school in math, physics, or engineering who is expected to already know this material and therefore needs a handy reference.

I've read many self-help communications books and this one really gets to the heart of the matter -- ask and you shall receive; ask the right question(s) and you'll get what you want/deserve. It was an easy and enjoyable read that gets you engaged from the first chapter (unlike so many other books that take 5 chapters to explain what they're to accomplish). The quizzes really provide helpful and immediate feedback. You can read from cover to cover or use as a reference. Either way, this book gives you tools to use right away. You'll carry this one around with you until you've mastered the technique.

Dorothy Leeds skillfully addresses the problem that we all seem to have in communication---asking the right question. She takes you through asking yourself what it is you're trying to achieve, and then helps you think about how to formulate an effective "query" to receive your answer. She says (and I agree) that next to the effective use of silence, asking 'smart questions' is the second most powerful communication tool that there is.
