I feel more confident about math

I got this book at book fair for about 25 cents and kept saying to myself what can this book actually do for me? Well I discovered the fears that I had with performing math and that a lot of people have those same fears. When told how confront my fears it was like a serious wall had came tumbling down. I have started studying college algebra again which was so difficult for me fifteen years ago and it seems that this subject is no longer taboo. Before with math I always thought that I need a teacher/professor to teach me the subject. However I have discovered that is not true and that self learning college algebra is better for me. This is one of the most liberating experiences of my life and I am grateful to the authors of this book.

A must have book to analyize problems with water treatment.

This book is a need item to help trouble shoot problems with boiler, DA tanks, condensate return tanks,pumps, and piping. If you can see the problem, you will probably see a picture of the problem in this book along with what caused it...and in color 95 percent of the time. It has been a real life saver, literlly. You gotta have this book even if you only use it once..it could save your life, or your building/s. Try it ..you will like it. My instructor in 2 grade class was so impressed it got one.

fabulous for those who need to keep a meeting on track!

Although I was skeptical about this title, I decided to go ahead and buy it. Well, I was not diappointed! I found that the amount of information provided was beyond my wildest dreams. You DO have to do some digging within the book, but I have used SEVERAL of the ideas and feel that my meetingas are more focused and on track than ever. Especially when it comes to technical trainings (which I do!), the book gives a grat deal of info regarding training issues and how to keep people interested!

Fun, Fun, Fun

Since I work with a wide variety of ages, upper elementary through adult, I found this book to be a valuable resource. A lot of the activities are geared more toward the adult side, but I have very successfully adapted several of the activities to the younger aduience. The section at the beginning of the book with the How-To's for facilitators presents some excellent advice. The activities are categorized very nicely, and the lay-out of the activities themselves is very similar to an educator's lesson plan, which I also think is a big plus.

For anyone that has an interest in South Africa or Apartheid, this book is great. Not many people know of Albert Luthuli but he played a major part in the uprising of the non-white people. Its a good book. Read it.

like the African continent

The history of black people is, like the African continent, largely unwritten, especially from the black perspective. Its milestones and landmarks, like Sharpeville and Sophiatown can only be truly perceived in the first-hand experiences of people like Albert Luthuli. Few Africans have written, because the opportunities have not arisen, so a book like Luthuli's is almost unique. A must-have for any serious researcher of African and black history.

David Berkowitz and the angry lone nut theory

Did David act alone? After hearing a number of different things about the Son of Sam crimes, I decided to do my own research. I read many articles and accounts of "what really happened", including this book.
Now, after all this research...I'm more confused than ever.
The author of 'Son of Sam' is obviously bent on the fact that David was, as the theory says, another "angry lone nut". I have a hard time believing this theory in any case, so of course I had a hard time believing it here.
Was David really part of a Satanic cult? (Namely the Process - Church of the Final Judgement, a name that, curiously, has come up in a few criminal investigations, including the Manson murders. Though generally described as "non-violent", a number of newspaper and internet articles have associated David Berkowitz and the Son of Sam murders with this cult.) If so, why doesn't Klausner mention this? Surely he seemed to focus on David's spirituality, but even in the exerpts from the diaries at the back of the book, I'm pretty sure I read something about a "church group". If it wasn't there, I'm sure I read comments David made in a number of other articles.
In defense of the book, David's psychosis definately suggests that he was capable of committing these crimes alone. He did know the specific details, and nothing directly implies that anyone else was involved.
Yes, David is given to exagerration, childish bragging and self-empowering lies. He reminds you of a confused child in a man's body. In other words, he's a paranoid schizophrenic. He has often blamed unseen forces, specifically demons and the devil, for his actions. He thought he was a victim of demonic possession, that he and the "Son of Sam" were different people. As anyone who has read the book will remember, David considered himself to be a "good" person. Could he have lied about the church group, consciously of unconsciously, to shift blame from himself? It's definately possible. But did he?
Also, was there new evidence, after the book written, that Klausner didn't know about? I've heard a bit about this, though I don't know the specifics.
After what I've read, I'm not sure what to believe, except that Berkowitz committed the actual crimes alone. However, all we get from that conclusion is that he deserves life imprisonment. (365 years, whatever.) It doesn't offer us any guidance as to the actual motive, which, in my opinion, is the most important part of any crime, so we can ensure that something this horrible wouldn't happen again. There are no reasons for crimes like this, just contributing factors. Like I said, I'm still confused.
As for the book itself, it's quite good, though at times it reminded me of a novel based on a movie, adding melodramatic little touches and outstanding, supposedly "shocking" statements. Recently having read Helter Skelter, I probably would have appreciated Klausner to include more facts and make this less "entertaining". Entertainment is good, but to see a story that carefully introduces characters, charts their progress with small yet memorable details, and ends in emotional payoff...well, that's why I go to the movies. The reason I read true crime is to know the little things: the details of the crimes, the investigation, lie detector tests, complete interviews... I greatly appreciated the pages from David's diary at the back, though I wonder about the author's intent on including it.
I realize that I'm the first person to give this book any less than five stars, but I'm not going to lie; that's simply how I feel about it.

Excellent

This is an excellent account of the Son of Sam murders. The author writes from the point of view of the detectives, victim and Berkowitz. The reader will feel at times as if they are part of the investigation. Very well written and factual account. Please don't believe the garbage in Maury Terrys' book. Berkowitz acted alone and was not part of a world wide cult. He was, in reality, just an anti-social, fat, loser who held a city in fear for a few months in the late 1970s.

Accurate book: Detective Falotico cracks case and arrests killer

To date, this is the best book on the Son of Sam capture. Mr. Klausner accurately credits Detective John Falotico as the arresting officer. In the future other books may add to the historical record but for now this account remains the best. Many have tried to take the credit for the capture of the Son of Sam but the New York Police Department officially credited John Falotico as the arresting officer. This book explains exactly the critical role he played.

Recent obituaries of Detective Edward Zigo seem to credit him as the arresting officer--or at least one of the arresting officers-- even using phrases such as "slapped the handcuffs" on the killer or "helped arrest David Berkowitz." Det. Zigo was NOT the arresting officer of the Son of Sam.
In fact, Detective Zigo was not even present at the arrest of David Berkowitz.
REPEAT: Detective Zigo was not even present at the arrest of the Son of Sam.
He was out getting a search warrant. Detective Zigo was assigned to work with Detective John Falotico.
This book makes clear what role John Falotico played and what role Ed Zigo played in the investigation. This book is to be trusted.
To corroborate the book, may I tactfully suggest that everyone read the obituaries for both John Falotico and Ed Zigo from the true "journal of record" the newspaper, The New York Times. Despite a minor error saying Ed Zigo "helped arrest" David Berkowitz (again, Det. Zigo was not present at the arrest) the obituary of Detective Zigo from The New York Times backs up Mr. Klausner's book in all other respects. Ed Zigo's obituary should be contrasted with that of John Falotico.

A fine job of writing for a difficult topic!

I am researching bioethics and especially eugenics in the United States as far as it concerns the Deaf and Hard-of-hearing. Because I work in the university bookstore, I went to see what the classes which teach bioethics are using for textbooks. Dr. Pence's books were being used, and as I looked through them, I could see he dealt with many of the topics I am concerned with...allocations of scarce resources, infant non-treatment on the basis of disability, and the worth that our society puts on the life of someone with a disability. (Nice story about a Deaf-mute who wasn't informed he was going to be the experiment for piggybacking a chimp heart).
Dr. Pence is an excellent writer. This book was an easy and interesting read. It told details concerning prominent cases that I didn't know, and he gives the references to everything, so that makes my research much easier.
Again, this is one of those books that is a must-read for medical students, anyone in public health, educators, and the disabled. Knowledge is power. We can only protect ourselves in the medical community when we know about the conflicts of interests that doctors and researchers face, and how ethicists and politicians perceive not only the disabled, but everyone. In this new world where the Human Genome Project is almost finished, and doctors are already clamoring for testing of all newborns (and fetuses), and there are no protective laws on the books against discrimination...it is very apparent we may possibly have another eugenic movement on our hands. It is up to all of us as informed readers to read someone like Pence and get involved with legislation to stop this from occurring again. Karen Sadler, Science Education, University of Pittsburgh

I am finishing up my Master's in Bioethics, and am proud to say that while I cannot claim to be an expert, I have worked hard to become informed about ALL SIDES and perspectives of bioethics issues. I will be the first to admit that I certainly have a certain perspective, belief system and even "agenda" when discussing what I know of these topics with others. Yet one of the first things we learn in Academia is the importance of intellectual honesty and integrity. As the previous reviewer noted, Pence sadly displayed little - especially in the section regarding Abortion.

I had two main complaints with this book relating to Pence's lack of intellectual integrity. The first is that he misrepresents the side he clearly is advocating (pro-abortion) AND the side he clearly is not advocating (antiabortion) by citing quotations taken out of context and misconstrues them, stating blatantly incorrect medical facts [see previous reviewer for more detail, and there were more examples than he gave], etc.] and other issues. The second is that he clearly is advocating for the pro-abortion argument while posing objectivity. I am in opposition to abortion, but I have read pro-abortion arguments that have made sense logically/philosophically and also given credibility to the antiabortion view by correctly representing the viewpoints (albeit while refuting them). Pence's abortion advocacy is lacking in both - sadly lacking in logical and philosophical credibility and also horribly lacking and misrepresenting the "antiabortion" claims.

I have much less to complain about in his other sections. On the whole I would be very wary of letting anyone take this as an objective, "factual" account. If you choose this as a class curriculum, use it as a representative of an abortion advocate and not someone trying to objectively state sides of issues to allow your students to think critically about on their own time. The other sections are less controversial and thus have less chanced of being "slanted".
