This book was the most difficulty, unfriendly read for me. It's full of tables and scientific stuff that I couldn't read or refer to easily. I ended up giving it away which is a shame, but what's the point of collecting so much information if it's so unappealing to read and ultimately unreadable? They really need to work on improving this, then again, it's an almanac - perhaps the expectations for a pleasurable read should be dim.

This book contains a wealth of nutritional information directed
to the health-conscious consumer. There are specific protocols
pertinent to the back, headaches, depression and a multiplicity
of disease processes and conditions. For instance, back pain
may be managed with Vitamin C, bioflavinoids, Calcium and
Magnesium (Mg. ) Depression may be managed with Dl-Phenlalamine, B-complex, Vitamin C, Iron (Fe) , SAM (e), Folic Acid,
B1, B6 and Vitamin B 12. Licorice, ginger and cayenne may be utilized for depressive states. The aromas "Melissa",
" Creeping Hysop" & "Frankincense" may be utilized for optimal
effect. Deep-tissue massage and chiropractic are also helpful
for depression. Diabetes may be managed with GTF chromium,
Co Q10 enzymes, Vitamins C and E, B6 and B12. Camelia sinensis
tea is known to reduce blood sugar. Infections are helped by
Vitamin A. Biofeedback has been known to help the bladder.
Garlic, Vitamin C, Calcium and Magnesium also help with bladder

Charming book about truly remarkable ( unbelievable) events

This is a pleasant, rambling story of a previously wealthy Hungarian, who trained in art in Paris in the early 1900's, rubbing elbows with the greats of the post impressionist era. After the wars bankrupted his family, he found himself penniless with no real profession, and found he could apply his artistic training very successfully by creating fraudulent art "by" Picasso, Braque, Dufy, Matisse and so on. The characters are quite well developed and the story entertaining indeed.

Using this for years!

I have taught the Fingermath method to many Learning Disabled and blind students over my 30 year career. I have found that many students just need the tactual aspect of this method to help them jump over to the memorization of basic facts. I especially like using Fingermath to teach the multiplication facts. I have taught many adults, mostly teachers, and it is funny, but they have a harder time catching on, so don't give up! This is a gift!

I highly recommend Dr. Navabi's book - it's a keeper.

Background info:
I have been an ASIC engineer since 1986. I have designed many ASICs in Verilog and VHDL. I have 7 books on VHDL including Dr. Navabi's text.
Some of the VHDL books out there are more like cookbooks: too many code examples and not enough explanation. Navabi's book is NOT a cookbook.
Further, it is hard to do a direct comparison to other VHDL texts. In a way it would be like comparing apples and oranges. While some VHDL texts try to explain everything about VHDL, other books like Dr. Navabi's explain the more useful parts of VHDL as being used by a digital systems or ASIC designers. While other books are mostly for RTL coders with very little testbench and system level modeling info. In my opinion, test is extremely important as well as modeling at the system level. Many books out there do not do a good job on those aspects. Most books provide very brief explanations of test benches and/or system level modeling.
This book is highly useful for a digital systems design engineer or architect. This book is not only covers coding for RTL synthesis but doing the testbenches, and sytem level modeling as well. This book has a very good balance between all the main uses of the VHDL modeling langauage.
Here is my overview of the chapters :
The first two chapters provides you with a history of modeling languages and the reason VHDL was created. I recommend that you read these chapters, especially if this is your first modeling language. The chapters are not long, but it provides a very good high level overview to modeling, synthesis, and test.
Chapter three gets you up and running quickly by providing simple examples to give you a good introduction to behavioral and structural VHDL.
Chapters 4 though 9 are heart of the VHDL aspect of the book.
Chapter 4 is very important. It describes VHDL inertial and concurrent timing in great detail. In fact, I believe Dr. Navabi's book is the best available in this aspect! It is important to understand for modeling and especially testing purposes. Chapter 5 is on structural VHDL. it is a good place to start since it is the easiest to understand. Chapter 6 introduces procedures, functions, packages, generics, and configurations. I like the way this chapter is written. Other books are not as easy to read as this one. Great examples and its clearly written as is the entire book actually. Chapter 7 digs into the VHDL types, operators, and attributes. Chapter 8 covers guarding and signal resolution. It also provides a good state machine example. Once you get through Chapter 8, pat yourself on the back because you got through the hard parts of VHDL! VHDL is a harder language to learn than Verilog. But for good reason, VHDL is much more powerful and structured than Verilog in my opinion. You can code faster in Verilog, but the code is not typically as readable as VHDL. Most of the VHDL codes I have seen are much more readable. Some of the Verilog code I have seen are downright nasty looking and time consuming to interpret. Chapter 9 starts to put it (chapters 6-8) all together by more thorough examples behavioral modeling: testbenches/harnesses, arbitration/handshaking, etc.
Chapters 10-11 puts it all together with some system examples : cpu, dma, system bus modeling/timing/interfacing, etc. even memory caches! These are not complicated examples but they are real world examples. All of the techniques are still begin used today. If they were more complicated examples the book would need to be much bigger. However, these are great examples that ties everything up. Once you complete chapter 11, you are well on your way! You will have accomplished something!
Don't overlook Chapters 12 (advanced modeling) and the appendices (esp. App. B, the synthesis subset). This additional information puts Navabi's book above other VHDL books in my opinion.
Conclusion:
It is difficult to create a VHDL book to be 'the' book for all types and levels of designers and engineers (architectural, RTL coders, testbench and verification, etc.) But, in my opinion this book comes closest. I highly recommend this book! I have many books on VHDL. This book is valuable to me as a reference and has helped me tremendously - it's a keeper! All the codes work and I only found one insignificant typo. I can not say that about any of my other VHDL books. In fact, I will probably soon be getting rid of some of my VHDL books to make space on my shelves for new books. I'll be keeping Navabi's VHDL book as a permanent reference- for sure! I recommend this book for beginners because I like the way it progresses and delivers the material: in the right order and in the right amount. I recommend this book for moer advanced people as well, I am sure that it has material that is not covered in other VHDL books. And it makes a great reference as well.
P.S.
There are recent additions to VHDL that are not discussed in this book..namely VHDL-AMS, which adds analog extentions. However, it is still very young and most simulators do not support the analog extentions yet.

Well-written and easy to understand guide to learning VHDL

This book is an easy read and could be used as a self-help guide for someone trying to learn VHDL on his/her own.

Examples provided in the book illustrate code cases that are both clever and insightful. They make one think about the code and comprehend it in a straightful manner.

Excellent Book for Beginners, Useful Reference for Test Bench Development

This book is an excellent book for beginners to VHDL. It is written in such a way that it presents the development and nuances of the VHDL language sequentially and ties some of the history of the language into the examples. It is very useful when you want to know why the syntax works the way it does. My only criticism is that it can be difficult to find examples when using it as a desk reference. I often found myself thinking, "I remember reading how to do this, but I can't seem to find it now." I would highly recommend this book if you can dedicate the time to read it cover-to-cover as it makes things easier to find when you need them.

Even though I've been writing VHDL in industry for 10 years now, I learned a lot by reading this book. I think there are other books, "A VHDL Synthesis Primer" by Bhasker that are more compact design references, but this book is a must have for comprehensive language coverage and some of the more powerful concepts that often aren't covered by other references. It is also an invaluable tool if you plan on doing any test bench development or complex modeling (i.e. transistor, or gate level logic simulation).

In summary, I would highly recommend this book. If you can dedicate the time to read it cover-to-cover it will help you become a better VHDL coder.

About the Author
Robert Roswell Palmer, a former professor of history at Princeton University, was educated at the University of Chicago and Cornell University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1934. His books include Catholics and Unbelievers in Eighteenth-Century France, Twelve Who Ruled: The Year of the Terror in the French Revolution, and the two-volume Age of the Democratic Revolution, the first volume of which won the Bancroft Prize. A former president of the American Historical Association, he has received honorary degrees from universities around the world, and was awarded the Antonio Feltrinelli International Prize for History in 1990. He and his wife live in Newtown, Pennsylvania.

Joel Colton taught in Duke University’s history department for forty-two years. He was educated at City College of New York and Columbia University, which awarded him his Ph.D. in 1950. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has been a Phi Beta Kappa lecturer and the recipient of Guggenheim, Rockefeller, and National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships. His books include Léon Blum: Humanist in Politics, for which he received a Mayflower Award. He has cowritten, with R. R. Palmer, the previous eight editions of A History of the Modern World. He lives in Durham, North Carolina.

Lloyd Kramer is a professor of history at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His books include Threshold of a New World: Intellectuals and the Exile Experience in Paris, 1830–1848 and Lafayette in Two Worlds: Public Cultures and Personal Identities in an Age of Revolutions, which won the Gilbert Chinard Prize and the Annibel Jenkins Biography Prize. He lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

An excellent book, but too high-level for many students

The Palmer & Colton text is an excellent book. I (an AP European History teacher) found it to be extremely well-written, authoritative, and interesting. Many textbooks are written in such a manner as to put even a history teacher to sleep, or, if they are written in an interesting manner, suffer from shoddy scholarship. "A History of the Modern World" suffers from neither of these flaws. It does, however, have a few weakenesses. As mentioned in other reviews, it has fewer illustrations than most secondary texts, and none of the illustrations are in color, making maps somewhat difficult to read and greatly reducing the value of putting art in the book. Palmer & Colton also spend a bit less time on social history. Finally, though extremely well-written and interesting for the accomplished reader, it is quite heavy reading for even a high-level high school reader. Hence, while some students love "A History of the Modern World," many others dread having to read it. All that said, I believe for sheer volume and quality presentation of information, this is the best AP European Hisory textbook I have read.

A brilliant point of view

{The most valuable aspect of this book is the unique and insightful perspective of the authors. Their ability to see the large world picture and draw parallels see events from different angles makes this work a thought-provoking reference.} {For instance even the horrible Spanish colonization of the America's was placed in a different light when the authors explained that the Native Americans had also been unfree under their local chiefs, and that the Inquisition was mild compared some of the cruelties of the Aztecs and Incas. The European colonization of other continents was explained as being in a continuum with other European expansions including the Crusades. The new religious attitudes brought about by the Renaissance was compared to the new religious adaptations in Confucian, Islamic, and Hindu societies. Even the five page summary of the American Civil War was in many ways more informative than entire documentaries (because of its world perspective).} {This book is also valuable for the minor things it throws in that changes one's whole point of view. It for example pointed out that there really was no such concept as "Europe" in ancient times, and it described the Roman Empire as an "experiment of civilzing the West."} {For me, the book's biggest fault is that it's called "History of the Modern World" and really only deals with European history. However, the authors make note of this at the beginning and explain their rationale. There still is precious little mention of the Ottoman Empire and other nations whom Europeans were in direct contact with.} {Others have complained that this history contains more facts than anyone would care to know, but all the facts are somewhat relevant and are part of the whole picture. It is designed so that it does not need to be read cover to cover, since there are numerous cross references and a comprehensive index. It is definitely more on the political side than the human interest side, but it contains many important underlying facts that I haven't seen in other textbooks like land transfers during revolutions and population growth rates. It is certainly a fascinating book to peruse for anyone intersted in European or World History.}

A huge book - in every way!

This classic is a must for everyone who appreciates well-written history books. Palmer and Colton's gargantuan "History of the Modern World" conveys a vast amount of knowledge in an interesting manner (although at times close to unbearably dense)and its ideas and perspectives are always relevant, new and enlightening. This is a great supplementary text for every European history course you may be taking or teaching. It is also a treasure chest of historic personalities, events and a panoply of culure through the ages. And a look at the enormous Bibliography will convince you that this book was indeed written by two first-rate scholars. Don't let the price scare you, it is a tremendous read, wonderfully presented, perfectly readable, and it's about as much fun as 800 pages of history can be!

Good ideas - but left wanting more

With the reviews, I thought I was buying a winner. But, when it arrived, it had a few good ideas, but nothing really blew my socks off. I called fellow trainers and got better ideas from them. Book is full of basic stuff...could use a bit more physical or outdoor examples.

Essential reference for college freshmen and other writers

I read part of this book for Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic. What impressed me was the clear, concise instructions for using a university library and how to maintain good interview and lab notes. Reference sources are listed along with URLs. The best advice I uncovered in my first experience was to verify information found on the Web with suggestions for locating and evaluating reliable sites. I skimmed the rest of the book and found that it also has lots of information I should, but don't always, remember from my college years, so am buying one for me and one for a high school graduation present.

How much do you know?

When I first wanted to buy this book, the reviews weren't that helpful. Alot of issues with mistakes and proof reading. My background is one of electronics, I have over 100 semester hours in electrical engineering from a major college. So before you buy this book, let me point out some things.

First, this isn't an introductry book for electronics, If your looking for a guide buy something else I highly recommend The Art of Electronics Anyway back to the review:

This book covers several items which I spent several years learning in college all 4 years. It is filled with integration, and other wonderful calculus and physics formulas. If you are afraid of upper level math, don't buy this. It goes WAY beyond introductry courses,and will not explain how or why.

On the other side of the house. If you have a background in Electronics, heavy in theory. If you are alittle rusty or just trying to revive those long dead brain cells, this book is excellent. Yes there are a few mistakes, but as your working the problem, its very easy to spot, missed decimal places etc. I'm currently using this book to prep for the US Postal Electronics Tech Test. I anticipate this will cover everthing I need, with the exception of number conversions, binary to decimal etc. That might be covered, but first glance I didn't see it.

So in summary, if an Integration sign scares you, or If you have watched "Good Will Hunting" and have never seen the symbols he writes on the mirror, or have never heard of Kirchhoff,vectors, Thev Eq, or even Ohms Law don't buy this. If you have seen or done the above, your pretty safe.

3500 problems

Honestly, this book should be called "3,500 Problems in Electrical Circuits" - the 3000 problems presented along with the 500 errors in their solutions. Buyer beware - unless you're confident in your circuit skills and just want to solve problems - be careful! This book has incorrect solutions from missing terms to magically appearing factors of 10 to misspellings (even misspelling Newton! which is the equal of scientific sacrilege). Many of the circuit drawings are not even clean CAD drawings but cruder hand drawings...

All of this shows a clear lack of attention, review and editing - so unless you wish to perform these functions, move on! This is the product of a cram session overnighter in order to get a paycheck... The value equivalent of "Britney Spears Guide to Class and Refinement"...

A book all Electrical Engineering Student should have!

As a sophomore taking my first Circuit Analysis class I found that the my text didn't have much examples or problems to solve at the end of each chapter. Schaum's was the solution, it's a great practice guide, especially when it comes to solving circuit analysis where the possible problem combinations are infinite and only practice will enable you to master the basics of circuit analysis.
It's also great for preparation before an exam. If you think you're ready for a test, I'm sure Schaum's will prove you wrong.

Machines and functions, Machines and logic

I'll admit I didn't understand much of what's in this book (will have to read it again some day), but the part I _did_ was accompanied by repeated feelings of "Aha! Finally!". It helped me get some sort of gut feeling on how the seemingly completely separate worlds of imperative machines and functional/logic languages are bridged in terms of implementation. Above all, don't be put off by publication date -- this stuff doesn't get old.
