About the Author
Gregory Pence is one of the pioneering bioethicists of America. Having taught for thirty years in a medical school, he has seen many past prophecies of doom fail. He is optimistic about biotechnology.

He is internationally famous for defending cloning and genetically modified food against bioLuddites who oppose research on stem cells and cloning. Because of his views, his talks have been picketed by Greenpeace and anti-cloning zealots.

His Classic Cases in Medical Ethics: Accounts of the Cases that Shaped Medical Ethics, 4th ed., 2003, is one of the standard textbooks of bioethics. His Who's Afraid of Human Cloning? (1998) is already regarded as a classic in bioethics for its rigorous attack on opponents of cloning. His Cloning After Dolly: Who's STILL Afraid of Human Cloning? will appear in late 2004. His Designer Food: Mutant Harvest or Breadbasket of the World? won a Choice Outstanding Academic Title in 2003.

He doesn't think the sky will fall if a cloned baby is born. In opposing laws against cloning, he was asked to testify in 2001 before Congress and in 2002 before the California Senate.

Constantly in demand for national television, Pence has been interviewed on Bobby Battista's "Talk Back Live" with Bobby Battista, "The Point" with Gretta von Susteren on CNN, "The Early Show with Bryant Gumbel" on CBS, "Wolf Blitzer's Washington" on CNN, as well as on National Public Radio's "Marketplace" and its "Weekend Edition." He has also been interviewed by TIME magazine, the New York Times, and most national publications. He has published in Newsweek, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal.

Pence has given the Soundings Lecture at Castleton State College, VT, the Thornton Lecture at Alma College, MI, the Seidman Trust Lecture at Rhodes College, TN, and the Hughes Memorial Lecture at West Liberty State College in WVA. He has talked at Princeton, Yale, and Stanford. He has given keynote talks about cloning at universities in Portugal, London, Switzerland, and Australia.

Pence teaches at the medical school at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB), where he also directs a program for gifted undergraduates pre-admitted to UAB medical school. There, he has been voted Best Teacher.

He grew up in Washington, D.C., was graduated from the College of William and Mary cum laude in Philosophy, and earned his doctorate from New York University in 1974, where he worked on his dissertation under bioethicist Peter Singer, now at Princeton University.

Good for THINKING about medical ethics

Lots of philosophy articles on medicine. I'm a philosophy professor who teaches medical ethics and I'm distressed that most books and discussions leave out the PHILOSOPHICAL REASONING behind positions on both sides. To this book's credit, all the articles (each reproduced in full) emphasize how and why the author supports or rejects a position on: euthanasia, abortion, genetic testing, locking up the harmless insane, and national medical coverage. I used it in my class and will use it again.

Great source articles

This is a premiere collection of the top philosophical essays behind medical ethics today. I, too, teach a philosophy course on medical ethics and use this anthology as supplementary reading material. Some of the articles are a little heady for undergrads who aren't (yet) philosophy majors, so I also recommend Gregory Pence's companion book, Classic Cases in Medical Ethics, which is considerably more approachable and even interesting to read.

Just Right Approach to a Difficult Subject

Classic Works in Medical Ethics, edited by Gregory E. Spence may be the perfect approach to a difficult subject, since, by its nature, medical ethics is a case by case, issue by issue driven kind of subject.

One may be a bit surprised that in spite of the appearance in the title of the word "Classic", there is no article older than the 20th century. There is nothing by Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, or even Dr. William James. This is appropriate, since most questions in medical ethics probably developed over the last 50 years, with the advent of antibiotics, organ transplants, and genetic research. Issues over practices as recent as the pre-WW II experiments on Tuskegee students with syphilus are already part of the history of medical ethics, for which you may want to go to Spense's book "Medical Ethics, Accounts of the Cases That Shaped and Define Medical Ethics". Another game changing event was Roe Versus Wade Supreme Court decision which changed the playing field for many issues, not just abortion.

I am not an expert on this field, but I have read several other books on the subject, and I see that most of the "Usual Suspects" are here, such as Peter Singer, Don Marquis, and Joseph Fletcher. I am a bit surprised that there is nothing by Tom Beauchamp or Bernard Gert, authors of major contemporary books on Medical Ethics.

For those who are unfamiliar with writings in philosophy, I must warn you that most articles here are pretty tough reading. Sometimes the gap between agreeing and disagreeing on a subject is wafer thin. But that's the point of providing two or more articles on opposite sides of questions. You get to see if the chap arguing side A is not misrepresenting side B. And, from many of these articles, it appears most authors are playing fair, which is only to be expected, since most articles come from professional journals (medical or philosophical) where articles are reviewed by contemporary experts in the field for accuracy and fairness.

It may even be appropriate to say this book has value in a Pastoral care curriculum, since one thing practicing clergy face far more often than other non-medical people, is how these questions affect people in medical crises.

Every software programmer should read Chapter 3

Software engineering is not a discipline backed by science; it has many theories but few metrics and objective data to evaluate the theories. However, software must be built, people are hired to meet important business goals, and projects and careers are dependent on an accurate assessment of project factors. Jones' book supplies an objective way for software engineering managers to compare their projects against empirical data gathered from over 6700 software projects.

The next time a manager challenges your effort and schedule estimates, you can turn to Jones' book (Chapter 3 is a must read for even time pressed managers and the charts alone worth the value of the book) and find the objective data to back you up.

Outstanding, understandable by non technical managers

I bought this book as a suppliment to Software Engineering Economics, by Boehm, because of it's later publication date. However, once I read the book I believe that the Boehm should be a suppliment to this work. Before reading this book I was unfamiliar with function points. We are now implementing them in our company. If this book does not bridge the gap between technical and management it goes a long way toward that end.

This is an excellent technical book that should be a standard reference for anyone working in the field of S/W QA/Reliablity. The work assumes a mathematical background at the upper division/graduate level. The section on orthogonal defect classification is especially good. This is an essential work for anyone compiling metrics for gauging how well a S/W development effort is progressing. Software is supplied for performing one's own analyses. Meaty stuff for the serious S/W QA engineer! Well done.

The best handbook I've seen on the subject.

Professor Lyu defines, catalogs, explains, and demonstrates concepts and models for reliability. If you're trying to answer questions like "based on historical data, when is the next expected failure," or "what model best predicts my software's reliability," or "when will the software be stable" then you need this book.
True to its name, it is a handbook, so you can jump around and cross reference, but you can also read it like a book.
Note, however, that there is some fairly heavy statistical math. Don't let all the greek letters scare you. It's all explained, and it has a fantastic appendix that covers all you need to know concerning statistics to use the book without the mumbo-jumbo.
To complete your collection, go to the web and obtain a copy of SMERFS^3, which is a software package developed by Dr. William Farr that does all the modeling math for you. Additionally, check out the book Software Reliability by Musa/Iannio/Okumoto (0-07-044093-X). These two things, together with this book will equip you for just about anything you need to measure.

A classic for those who know little to nothing about software reliability, and how to engineer it in. It's more than just "testing the hell" out of a program. You really need to design reliability and safety into your code and its design documents. This book is an excellent survey of the classical methods on just how to do that.

The bonus cd has many tools and methods to make this job more straightforward for the practitioner.

Magellan is one of the great figures of the modern age. His achievement--the first circumnavigation of the globe--was "the terminal event of the European Renaissance," asserts Joyner. Only an uncommonly determined man could have persevered in an extended journey into this unknown. "In 1520 less was known about the Pacific Ocean than we know today of interstellar space." When he was slaugh altered by South Sea Islanders, his chronicler lamented, "They killed our mirror, our light, our comfort, and our true guide." This book provides a solid account of the explorer's life and accomplishment. Joyner reminds us how the voyage felt to the men who lived through it; success was dubious and distant, perils and discomforts were felt daily. Exceptionally well written, this is the first biography of the explorer to appear in more than two decades. Recommended for both public and academic libraries.

A straightforward but tepid biography from fisheries biologist Joyner of the great visionary Magellan, whose resolve to reach the Spice Islands by sailing around the lands encountered by Columbus and others prompted the first circumnavigation of the globe. Joyner begins with an overview of the history of seafaring and of Portuguese exploration of sea routes to India. Magellan, member of a rural branch of the Portuguese royal family, emerges from obscurity in the midst of the struggle in the Indian Ocean over control of the spice trade, proving himself a brave and resourceful fighter. But his less endearing demands for greater recognition earn him King Manuel's enmity, forcing him to cut his ties to Portugal in order to try his luck in Spain. With powerful backing, Magellan finds King Charles more receptive to his plans to open a spice route to the West, and in September 1519 five ships set sail under his command. Dissension plagues the voyage almost from the start, but Magellan carries on even with a fleet reduced by mutiny, reaching the Pacific through the icy waters of the strait now bearing his name. After he arrives in the Philippines, his achievements cloud his judgment to such a degree that he is killed in 1521 while leading a pointless assault on the village of a rebellious chief. His crew continues on, arriving back in Spain, emaciated and cramped into one remaining ship with a cargo of spices, three full years after setting out. Research includes original documents and subsequent narratives of the voyage, as well as the author's firsthand experiences along the coast of southern South America, but Joyner proves unequal to the task of conveying either the spirit of this momentous event or of the remarkable man behind it. Fabulous book, well-researched, easy-to-read

The Kirkus Review above did not give Joyner's book justice. I've read many books on Magellan by authors such as Parr, Cameron, Hawthorne, Hildebrand, Zweig, and Silverberg, and Joyner's book provided the intricate detail that I was looking for. Joyner returned to the original sources to provide such details as the ships' rosters --- crewmembers' names, where from, job aboard, salary, etc. --- mini-biographies of key players, lists of supplies, weaponry, etc. It's far more than a biography! In reference to the book not conveying the full impact of Magellan's personality nor of the voyage, I didn't find that to be true. So many biographies of Magellan read almost as fiction, to such an extent that you can't separate fact from fiction, that it was refreshing to have a factual account, interesting, easily read and absorbed. Well done, Joyner.

When I read this book I thought I could be reading a novel, not a historical account. It is fast paced and exciting history. Whether or not you are familiar with Magellan and his first ever global circumnavigation, this is a must read for anyone interested in nautical exploration.

I read this book several times and marvel at its great accessibility. It represents probably the best research effort on the great navigator. Joyner's annotated bibliography is extremely helpful to the serious student of navigation history in general and Magellan in particular. No other work in the past 50 years compares with the scholarly excellence of this book. A scholar who is just starting to get familiar with the story of the circumnavigation will find this book a complete pathway to all that must lie ahead for a thorough understanding of the greatest adventure at sea. This is a must book for both layman and scholar!

I am a writer, learning Gregg in order to more efficiently record my thoughts in a legible manner.

Ave., Blvd., ttyl, brb, etc. These are all examples of shorthand. Shorthand is a skill that must be worked at, memorized. You can use it as intensely or little as you like. With my elementary knowledge of the system, I am using shorthand outlines for some longer words that I use regularly in my writing, to encourage progress.

Personally, I have found the Diamond Jubilee series to be the best option for those who are serious about acquiring practical knowledge of Shorthand. If you are merely interested in the topic and wish for an overview, there are plenty of less intimidating, free resources online. If you would like to spend less time learning a new system, but would still like improved speeds, I suggest Teeline, a more current form of shorthand adapted from outlines of the Roman alphabet that you already know.

Don't be discouraged by the immediate introduction of multiple concepts. This book was written for those looking to acquire the skill quickly. I simply dissected the book, with an initial 5-minute skimming to introduce myself to the concepts, with multiple reviews to tackle the concepts I deemed to be most important to my needs. I learn best this way, but if you prefer to sit down and practice a lesson each day, sequentially, that is how the book was designed to be used.

With a bit of work, Gregg can be personally adapted for other languages using some of the diacritics that were included in the 1929 Anniversary edition. Resources on this process are rather difficult to come by.

An outstanding reference handbook on quality!

I frequently use Juran and Gryna's Quality Control Handbook
as a reference for my work and writing. It is a comprehensive
reference for many issues in quality management, quality control,
and statisitical process control.
There are excellent discussions of quality as "fitness for
use," and the true costs of poor quality.
If you plan to take any of the American Society for Quality
Control's certification examinations, this is a good reference.
I used it for the Quality Engineering, Reliability Engineering,
Quality Management, and Quality Auditing exams, and it served
me well in each case.

Use of Quality Control Handbook 1983 - 1988

While I continue to find Juran's Quality Control Handbook useful today, it was especially valuable to me when re-engineering software to support Health and Welfare Benefit business systems.
Also, later at a federal agency I found Juran's "root cause" for quality problem management extremely valuable. Currently, I am pursuing a senior level advisory position in the federal government and hold the Certified Information Systems Security Professional credential. I find Juran's handbook still valuable and worth studying even in today's Internet world.
