The bible and encyclopaedia of wastewater engineering

I first got exposed to the textbook as an undergraduate student in civil engineering. Served as an excellent in depth textbook for that level. During my masters program it was a good starting point. As a consulting engineer, I can find most of the basic and fundamental answers. The language is lucid and simple. I have read lots of books on wastewater engineering. Agreed that there are more detailed texts available on specific areas of wastewater treatment, but this textbook does a very good job of striking that balance just right of covering material in enough detail for students and the practising engineer. It is usually enough unless you are writing a masters thesis or a doctoral dissertation. This text, together with the companion textbook, Collection and Pumping of Wastewater has served me very well during my college and professional career. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a good book on wastewater treatment. I very respectfully disagree with the gentleman from Istanbul above who feels that this book is poor. When taking my PE exam, if I was to be limited to just one textbook on wastewater, I would take this one.

Review from a process engineer

The book gives the modern process engineer enough background to engineer complete waste water treatment plants. Specially the biological part is very good. Only at the physical chemical part, the information is based on installations produced in the US. The European (nicer) designes and developments are not described in the book.

fourth edition overdue!

there is a bit of truth in all the above reviews. It has not entirely been my bible, but more a Readers Digest version; if I need a quick answer, it is the first book I grab. Yes there are a lot of mathematical mistakes or misprints in it,and that includes a good number of the worked examples, which rather defeats the purpose. Yes it is very American orientated, but it also has tables and footnotes throughout, giving useful or immediate conversions to other systems, well, metric that is, not imperial. There are a lot nicer processes about, some definitely European. But that misses the point a bit: the most fundamental problem is that the book is nearly ten years old. Therefore it is not surprising that newer processes are missing. I am desperately looking forward to a fourth edition, and I'll be the first to buy it! In the meantime I'll keep using the third. But what happened to the (Indian) paperback version, which was a lot better priced for a book of this age? Still, there is no substitute!

A few years ago I sold copies of many of my books by Walter Kaufmann because I thought I was an Elihu alter ego for him when what I really wanted was more opportunities to be alter ego for Walter Wink, Engaging the Powers: Discernment and Resistance in a World of Domination and Georges Bataille, The Accursed Share: an Essay on General Economy, Vol. 1: Consumption and The Accursed Share, Vols. 2 and 3: The History of Eroticism and Sovereignty.

Really great supplemental text and source of problems

This book doubles as a cheap textbook on the subject it covers - electric machines and electromechanics. If I remember correctly, this was not one of the more difficult upper undergraduate Electrical Engineering courses, but that was because I had a very good instructor. The textbook itself was somewhat useless...and expensive. This text has plenty of well done narrative explaining all of the concepts. With this particular subject, good figures are important too, and they are plentiful in this Schaum's outline. Equations are all explained and presented well, with lots of example problems as well as solved exercises. I particularly liked the last chapter in the book on the electronic control of electric machines. It does a good job of merging what is really two subject matters and explains concepts well. It shows Electrical Engineering students that all of these courses don't exist in a vacuum. You are going to need to learn how to merge electromechanics, electronics, and digital systems into unified designs, and this book gets you started down that road. One reviewer said that he/she thought the outline was dated. I haven't found that to be true at all, at least for the situations where I've required some brushing up. The student should already have an understanding of electric and electronic circuits, basic electromagnetics, and calculus. Highly recommended.

Helpful tool for electrical machine problems

I found that this book is a very useful source for solving problems related to elctrical machines. It provides clear and easy to follow instructions that are well laid out and easy to follow. It offers a varying level of problems ranging from the fundamentals through to the more complex machine problems. This is a useful aid or reference for anyone looking for a book to help them in their studies and wants to have more practice at solving problems relating to this subject.

Weak on PM Machines

Good book overall, but is getting dated. Most of the problems seem to be done in Gauss and Oersteds, and I don't believe there were any problems which used Neodemium magnets, which are most common in newer, high efficiency motors.

There was also very little on Permanent Magnet machines, about 6 pages, much of which was diagrams or descriptions of magnet types. Am still looking for a good book with problems on Permanent Magnet motors and generators.

Am using Hendershot and Miller's Design of Brushless Permanent Magnet Motors, which is very good. But it does not have many problems in it.

A good reference

This is probably your least expensive option for buying a book of standard details. It's best coverage is of timber and concrete. Structural steel leaves a bit to be desired, but isn't bad if you only want bolted connections (primarily beam to beam). Extensive coverage of timber details. Would be nice to add one or two line explanations of why a particular detail would be employed. If nothing else, you can hand a photocopy of a detail to your CAD tech as a starting point.

The best reference book I've ever met.

This is a reference book of English language grammar and usage. I have been using the 8th edition of this book for 20 years. It is hard to imagine that a 20 year old reference book could be more complete and up-to-date than any more recent book I have seen, but this one is. It is also easier to use than any other book I have seen. However, if anyone is thoroughly familiar with this book and yet knows of a better one, please let me know! Thanks.

Fifty Years as a Writer's Best Friend

Since the late 40's when I was working as a secretary part-time to finance my university courses, I have relied on the Hutchinson Handbook to solve my every language dilemma. It was at my right hand as I typed my husband's doctoral thesis, and it settled many an argument years later with our teen-aged children (who chanted "but our teacher said!"). I have given it to European colleagues who are often understandably perplexed by our wonderfully unpredictable language. They love it, and I continue to keep it by my computer at all times. It is undoubtedly too late to let Ms. Hutchinson know the value of her contribution over the years, but I hope that my testimony may bring it to the attention of other wordsmiths.

About the Author
Zainalabedin Navabi, Ph.D., (Boston, MA) is adjunct professor of electrical and computer engineering at Northeastern University and the author of VHDL: Analysis and Modeling of Hardware (1993, McGraw-Hill). Since 1981, he has been involved in the design, definition, and implementation of hardware description languages synthesis and test of digital systems. He has developed and supervised the development of many HDL-related software packages and tools, and has directed student projects in VLSI design, test synthesis, simulation, synthesis, and other aspects of digital system design automation

I highly recommend Dr. Navabi's book - it's a keeper.

Background info:
I have been an ASIC engineer since 1986. I have designed many ASICs in Verilog and VHDL. I have 7 books on VHDL including Dr. Navabi's text.
Some of the VHDL books out there are more like cookbooks: too many code examples and not enough explanation. Navabi's book is NOT a cookbook.
Further, it is hard to do a direct comparison to other VHDL texts. In a way it would be like comparing apples and oranges. While some VHDL texts try to explain everything about VHDL, other books like Dr. Navabi's explain the more useful parts of VHDL as being used by a digital systems or ASIC designers. While other books are mostly for RTL coders with very little testbench and system level modeling info. In my opinion, test is extremely important as well as modeling at the system level. Many books out there do not do a good job on those aspects. Most books provide very brief explanations of test benches and/or system level modeling.
This book is highly useful for a digital systems design engineer or architect. This book is not only covers coding for RTL synthesis but doing the testbenches, and sytem level modeling as well. This book has a very good balance between all the main uses of the VHDL modeling langauage.
Here is my overview of the chapters :
The first two chapters provides you with a history of modeling languages and the reason VHDL was created. I recommend that you read these chapters, especially if this is your first modeling language. The chapters are not long, but it provides a very good high level overview to modeling, synthesis, and test.
Chapter three gets you up and running quickly by providing simple examples to give you a good introduction to behavioral and structural VHDL.
Chapters 4 though 9 are heart of the VHDL aspect of the book.
Chapter 4 is very important. It describes VHDL inertial and concurrent timing in great detail. In fact, I believe Dr. Navabi's book is the best available in this aspect! It is important to understand for modeling and especially testing purposes. Chapter 5 is on structural VHDL. it is a good place to start since it is the easiest to understand. Chapter 6 introduces procedures, functions, packages, generics, and configurations. I like the way this chapter is written. Other books are not as easy to read as this one. Great examples and its clearly written as is the entire book actually. Chapter 7 digs into the VHDL types, operators, and attributes. Chapter 8 covers guarding and signal resolution. It also provides a good state machine example. Once you get through Chapter 8, pat yourself on the back because you got through the hard parts of VHDL! VHDL is a harder language to learn than Verilog. But for good reason, VHDL is much more powerful and structured than Verilog in my opinion. You can code faster in Verilog, but the code is not typically as readable as VHDL. Most of the VHDL codes I have seen are much more readable. Some of the Verilog code I have seen are downright nasty looking and time consuming to interpret. Chapter 9 starts to put it (chapters 6-8) all together by more thorough examples behavioral modeling: testbenches/harnesses, arbitration/handshaking, etc.
Chapters 10-11 puts it all together with some system examples : cpu, dma, system bus modeling/timing/interfacing, etc. even memory caches! These are not complicated examples but they are real world examples. All of the techniques are still begin used today. If they were more complicated examples the book would need to be much bigger. However, these are great examples that ties everything up. Once you complete chapter 11, you are well on your way! You will have accomplished something!
Don't overlook Chapters 12 (advanced modeling) and the appendices (esp. App. B, the synthesis subset). This additional information puts Navabi's book above other VHDL books in my opinion.
Conclusion:
It is difficult to create a VHDL book to be 'the' book for all types and levels of designers and engineers (architectural, RTL coders, testbench and verification, etc.) But, in my opinion this book comes closest. I highly recommend this book! I have many books on VHDL. This book is valuable to me as a reference and has helped me tremendously - it's a keeper! All the codes work and I only found one insignificant typo. I can not say that about any of my other VHDL books. In fact, I will probably soon be getting rid of some of my VHDL books to make space on my shelves for new books. I'll be keeping Navabi's VHDL book as a permanent reference- for sure! I recommend this book for beginners because I like the way it progresses and delivers the material: in the right order and in the right amount. I recommend this book for moer advanced people as well, I am sure that it has material that is not covered in other VHDL books. And it makes a great reference as well.
P.S.
There are recent additions to VHDL that are not discussed in this book..namely VHDL-AMS, which adds analog extentions. However, it is still very young and most simulators do not support the analog extentions yet.

Worth its weight in . . .

A really good text book is worth its weight in ....well maybe not gold but definetely more than silver. I can count on one hand the really great textbooks I have used in over 4 years of Electrical Engineer education (two others being "Fundamentals of Logic Design" by Charles H. Roth, Jr. and "Computer Systems Design and Architecture" by Vincent Heuring and Harry Jordan).
Having previously taken a VHDL class, I showed up for work and quickly realized I didn't know Diddly about how to USE VHDL. I felt like an idiot. Having purchased this book, 70% of the gaps in my knowledge have been address by the end of the third chapter. What I read in the text yesterday, I use ON THE JOB today. Having made it about halfway through the text, I can easily read and understand the code of my fellow Engineers and am starting to contribute meaningful code of my own.
This book is not intended to teach you Digital Logic (for that, see Logic Design by Roth (above)). It will teach you how to USE Digital Logic in Programmable Devices. By the way, where I work we have over 8000 Electrical and Computer Engineers. All Digital Hardware is designed in VHDL. If you don't think you will have to Master VHDL to become or continue as a Digital Hardware Designer, think again.
The material is this book is presented in a coherent and straightforward manner. It is thorough in its discussion of material while written in easy to understand prose. Key topics are driven home by use of well-planned examples. While agressive in its presentation, it is by no means overwhelming. I recommend this text both for students and those who wish to round out their VHDL knowledge.

Limited Usability, not very well written

We looked at this book as one of the candidates for a final-year class in VHDL. It had the advantages of being cheap and widely available. In the end we rejected it. It focuses only on writing code and not about any of the ideas underlying design or synthesis technology. As such we felt it would not give our students any deep understanding of the subject nor any transferable skills.

Very little detail.

I was expecting a little more from a book entitled automotive electronics. If you are looking for a jack of all trades and master of none type book this one will give you an overview of most of the systems in an automobile but definitely not anything to do with electronics.

Great textbook/engineering book

I spent $140 buying the 3-volume set of shop manuals for my car, but found very little information about how the systems worked. This made it tough for me to diagnose problems (e.g., low tire pressure warning message when all the tire pressures were correct) when taking the car to the shop. This book is not a Do-It-Yourself manual nor a repair guide, but rather a collection of chapters written by subject matter experts covering the sensors and systems in today's vehicles. I have found it very useful.

much better than the title or cover

I've worked in optics and interferometry and was absolutely delighted with this book.
Lots of tricks for hardware-store improvisation!
If you're not a tinkerer, this is not the book for you. There's little technical depth and no really good experiments or instrument design in it. (good experiments for this kind of book have either enormous educational value or reproduce poorly-understood phenomena).
If you know what you're doing though, this is where to look for tips on building your own optical bench, etc. All the student tricks I'd picked up along the way and then some. I've recommended it to a couple of past colleagues, too.

An update of a classic

This book is actually an update to The Laser Cookbook, also written by G. McComb, and which is apparently still in print. That book has gotten very high marks here on Amazon; Lasers, Ray Guns, and Light Cannons contains everything in Laser Cookbook, plus new information on laser diodes, and several additional projects.
Apparently, some folks get upset when a book, like this one, tries to be camp with a playful title and comic-book art. It's what's inside that matters, and there is lots of good information here, from a writer who clearly knows how to explain technical details. For my money, this book is a terrific introduction to the world of hobby lasers.
