Recipe for one WILD office Xmas party

After we heard what a crazy holiday party the auditor's office was planning, our agency was determined to outdo them, so we hurriedly formed a committee to study the problem and suggest workable plans of action. After rejecting several alternative ideas (such as duckpin bowling and tea at the state museum) we decided to really cut loose and order pizza at lunch time. Supplemented with soft drinks from the machine in the lobby, no less! Everything was set for the best holiday party ever.
When (after days of waiting) the magical day and hour arrived, we all sat down to enjoy our lunchtime celebration when the realization hit: the only way we were going to have fun and interesting conversation was if we actually talked to each other!!
For a few agonizing minutes we silently munched on our pizza and considered the grim situation, until (in a moment reminiscent of the deus ex machina device of Greek theatre) one of our number arrived late, a Santa cap jauntily perched on his head, an easel and flip chart under one arm, and THIS BOOK under the other (he had a magic marker too, but I don't really remember where he was carrying that - perhaps in his pocket protector?). The party was saved!
Now when the folks from the auditor's office show off this year's crop of photocopies of their faces and other body parts, we'll have some stories to tell them about how much fun a REAL party can be.

Like a Rocky sequel, this book doesn't get it. It would be useful with children and young adults, but I could not use it with high functioning adults. Had I not been in a hurry, and had reviewed the book, I would not have purchased it.

About the Author
Robert Horonjeff (deceased) was an internationally known consultant on airport design and professor of transportation engineering at the University of California, Berkeley.

Francis X. McKelvey is professor of civil engineering at Michigan State University. He has also served as a consultant on transportation and airport planning to federal, state, and local agencies, as well as to private firms in the United States and abroad. He played a major role in the planning and design of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Airport planner and engineer's viewpoint - updated

The best of its kind for the technical detail. We have most of the other airport and terminal design books on the bookshelf (up to 2005 publication date), but every time we come back to using Horonjeff for the serious design of new airports and extensions. It is also good for layout design by the engineer for terminals - although the architects may want more books. But there is another book - the 2003 book titled Airport Systems - Planning, Design and Management by Richard de Neufville and Amedeo Odoni - that will become the definitive text on airport design for the first part of the 21st century. So you'll need both, especially if you have to deal with the complexity of systems and stakeholders that are part of medium to large size airports.

Horonjeff has got the full set of data tables and charts to enable you to design anything. I seldom need to use the ICAO Manuals on a daily basis, and only use them for cross checking an obscure point. The upgrade from the 3rd edition to the 4th edition was a big one - it metricated much of the book, added in the latest aircraft (late model 737, 767s and ER, and the 777-200), and generally updated the book. Examples of new information are some good stuff on runway/taxiway capacity, and some additions to ACN/PCN. Worth spending the money to update. Essential to buy if starting from scratch. The best textbook for a technical course on Airport Engineering. Needs Airport Systems to have a rounded and modern view of masterplanning (and the successor to masterplanning - dynamic systems planning).

Long on principles, short on practical

I am a contractor in New England and hoped that this book would be useful for designing and installing HVAC systems in luxury single family homes. Although the author is quite good at explaining heat transfer, fluid motion and other engineering principles pertinent to HVAC, there is almost no practical applications help whatsoever.
Good book for a beginner HVAC Engineer, not a good book for a contractor, homeowner, or technitian.

About the Author
C.C. Lee is a Research Program Manager at the National Risk Management Research Laboratory of the U.S Environmental Protection Agency in Cincinnati, Ohio. In addition, he is currently the Chairman of the Executive Steering Committee for the National Technical Workgroup on Mixed Waste Treatment. He initiated and served as the Chairman of the First and Second International Congress on Toxic Combustion Byproducts (ICTCB) in 1989 and 1991. The ICTCB has been holding its meetings every two years since its creation in 1989. Until recently, Dr. Lee was an Adjunct Professor with the University of Cincinnati in Ohio and was an Assistant Professor at the North Carolina State University before joining EPA in 1974.

Shun Dar Lin is currently Senior Professinal Scientist at the Illinois State Water Survey, Peoria. A registered professional engineer, he has published many articles and reports on water and wastewater engineering. Dr. Lin brings to the book a background in teaching, research, and practical experience spanning over 40 years.

I found the book interesting but not useful. Your best bet is to go to the EPA website for procedures on calculations. Some of the discussion on dry scrubbers and other equipment was useful but not in a form that can be readily used for calculations or sizing.

some glaring issues, but otherwise ok

I bought this book after purchasing the truly stellar "Schaum's Outline of Russian Grammar" expecting this to be of the same quality. The book *is* useful and *does* have a lot of information packed in there, and the organizational structure does have some good ideas that make the exercises (which are good) hang together well. I have two main problems with the book beyond this. First, you are absolutely sand blasted with vocab. This may be good or bad, depending on your point of view, but I found it to mostly be bad, because it wasn't designed with absorption/acquisition in mind. I think this would be a great review or refresher for someone who was already very advanced with both grammar and vocabulary. Not so much for somebody trying to build up to that point.

The bigger problem is that unlike the Grammar Outline, or basically any other Russian course on the market, the vocabulary is presented without any accent marks. I can't imagine why they did this, since a word's stress is so critical to developing proper Russian pronunciation (much more so than for say, English or Spanish). Especially since stress shifts in case endings or verb conjugations can lead to hilarious or tragic misunderstandings or no understanding at all, this decision just doesn't make any sense to me.

A place to start.

Schaum's Outline of Russian Vocabulary would be useful to a student during the very earliest introduction to Russian. This book's material is duplicated in other introductions to the language. An advantage of these outlines is the large number of excersises for practice, all with answers.

Definitely recommendable

I agree with some of the other reviewers that this book requires a pretty solid knowledge of Russian grammar and vocabulary - but this is exactly why I like it. As an advanced learner, it seems to be more difficult to find learning material that is demanding enough to take you further. Especially when you've been dealing with newspaper articles and written language most of the time and didn't have enough exposure to the vocabulary used in everyday situations. The authors do a very good job of presenting various ways of using the new vocab (i.e. three different sentences with a slightly different way of using a word/expression); there are a lot of exercises, and there is the necessary repetition and reoccurrence of learned vocab that helps it stick.
