A Very Good Collection of Unsolved Cases
By Jonathan Turbide
I buy a lot of True Crime books; books about unsolved murder cases, Serial Killers, missing people, organized crime, and real life mysteries. Criminology is my passion, and this book written by the great Jay Robert Nash will be a wonderful addition to your library if, like me, you enjoy reading and learning more about unsolved cases
OPEN FILES is a comprehensive compendium of Unsolved crimes, presenting some of the most baffling cases in history. The hundreds of entries, arranged alphabetically, covers many types of crimes: murder, robbery, kidnapping, arson, forgery, assassination, and others. Embodying mystery, suspense, and intrigue in a style unique to the legendary Jay Robert Nash, this book has all the elements to fascinate general readers and crime buffs alike. The readers are encouraged to draw their own conclusion from the author's presentation of the facts and possibilities, and the book contains a great number of photographs and lithographs, adding a special flavor to this very interesting volume.
The list of cases you'll find in this book is impressive: The Black Dahlia murder, the murder of Bugsy Siegel, The Zodiac Killer, the New Orleans Axeman, the Hall-Mills case, Jack the Ripper, the murder of William Desmond Taylor, the murder of Starr Faithfull, the death of Thelma Todd, Cleveland's Butcher of Kingsbury Run, the death of Sir Harry Oakes, the murders of the Grimes sisters, the 1976-77 Detroit children killings, the murder of Estelle Carey, the "old Shakespeare" case, the Lizzie Borden case, the Wall Street bombing, and so many more. This is a very solid list of cases, all of them are interesting. The amount of pages dedicated to each cases vary; for example 10+ pages are dedicated to the Ripper case, while only 2 pages is dedicated to the Thelma Todd case. Some of the cases you'll find in this book are very obscure ( 1981 Vancouver teen killings, Shirley Collins, to name a few ), very good read. A lot of the entries are about crimes related to Organized crime and the Mafia, maybe too many of them, but overall this is a very good list.
Overall I highly recommend this book to anybody having a passion for Criminology, to every True crime buffs. I enjoy reading and researching Unsolved criminal cases, therefore I had a great time reading this book. The book is a little short ( less than 300 pages ) and there's a few mistakes here and there ( typical from Jay Robert Nash, his trademark ), but overall this is a wonderful collection of cases and a very good read. If you are looking for something a little more up-to-date then I recommend THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF UNSOLVED CRIMES by Michael Newton, written in 2009. :)

Waste of time
By orvuus
This information can almost be found in entirety in Bloodletters and Badmen, Nash's larger volume on crime and criminals. Most of the "unsolved" crimes are no mystery at all -- they were mob hits. Entirely skippable -- go for Bloodletters and Badmen instead.
