One of the most Intuitive Intros Anywhere

Unlike many other "beginner" books, this wonderful text takes the time to explain EVERY step that leads up to, then uses, calculus, from algebra to limits and beyond. The book is very unusual in showing graphing at every stage rather than deep abstraction and proofs. The examples are eclectic, from real estate and finance to physics and beyond. I create tutorials for online test prep in calculus, and no other text or support book comes close to this in the depth of explanations from every view (graphics, words, equations, examples) or painstaking intuitive comparisons. Even for professional engineers and mathematicians, the didactics of this little book are amazingly enlightening, and the examples show relationships BEHIND what the equations present, including why constants move a function in one direction or another and much more.
I know there are many reviews that show errors, and many were corrected between first and second edition, so be sure you get the second edition if you are buying used. There are still minor errors but they are "lost in the rounding" compared to the bigger picture of learning what is underneath the math in a way no other text takes the time to cover. Highly recommended.
If you're having a hard time separating negative from positive reviews, and this title is quite polarized, remember that negative reviewers have to meet the standard that this title is "so bad" that it isn't worth a penny, which is what this little gem is now going for! Also, take reviews pre 2007 (this edition) with a grain of salt, they are about another edition. Of course I think it is worth a lot more than a penny compared to hundreds of other books costing hundreds of dollars that are basically just show off volumes for the authors, but if you aren't sure, the investment is worth a penny even if only a few concept turn light bulbs on about what's really going on beneath the equations, and I find numerous cases where that happens, even for an old EE like myself with decades teaching grad level math.
Emailer question: "What do you mean by subtle insights or intuitions you don't get elsewhere?" A. For example, the authors take the time to show the difference, in words and graphically, between binomials, quadratics and polynomials, both from a function vs. equation viewpoint AND in completing squares solution differences, as well as graphically. Their discussion gives a deeply intuitive preview of differential equations by comparing the most basic concepts of equation to 0 vs. another function (this text obviously doesn't cover ODEs!). For emailers with earlier versions of missing equations, etc. my 2nd edition, purchased for .01 US, has none of those errors. The missing equations on the bottom of page 33 are only a graphic form of the statement above-- which simply shows that "fractions" are actually a way of showing that as x approaches infinity, y approaches zero when y=1/x in a "change of coordinates" frame of reference. The "missing" notation is simply as X --> +inf, y--> 0+, not a critical point, just a nice multiple modality example!

The most confusing calculus book I have ever purchased

This book is confusing in two ways: First, it launches into complex concepts, equations, problems and solutions without ever explaining the underlying fundamentals; the authors assume that the reader is already in command of many concepts and terms that would almost certainly escape a person who is "Utterly Confused" by calculus. Second, although the content of the book would be useful to a person who had successfully completed a formal education in calculus and was in need of a review, the authors chose to bill this book as a quick and easy way to understand the intricacies of calculus for those who have failed to grasp the basic fundamentals. They do a great disservice to the readers whom they dupe into buying this book by making false claims about its nature.

Good Idea-less than perfect execution

This little book is a terrific idea. However, it needed a careful editing before printing. The diagram on page 33 was not labeled. The answer on page 51 is wrong. The answer on page 55 contains an answer (t=533) that not only is wrong, but should have rung a bell with the authors when they got it. (The correct answer is 53.3, which can easily be verified.) This proves that using a hand calculator without thinking about what size the answer ought to be leads to embarassing errors. This actually is a very instructive example, but the conclusion that 27 years is the most appropriate time to harvest the forest has no supporting theory. At this frequency of errors, I expect to find more as I progress.
