About the Author
John Langan has taught reading and writing at Atlantic Cape Community College near Atlantic City, New Jersey, for more than twenty-five years. The author of a popular series of college textbooks on both writing and reading, John enjoys the challenge of developing materials that teach skills in an especially clear and lively way. Before teaching, he earned advanced degrees in writing at Rutgers University and in reading at Rowan University. He also spent a year writing fiction that, he says, is now at the back of a drawer waiting to be discovered and acclaimed posthumously. While in school, he supported himself by working as a truck driver, a machinist, a battery assembler, a hospital attendant, and an apple packer. John now lives with his wife, Judith Nadell, near Philadelphia. In addition to his wife and Philly sports teams, his passions include reading and turning on nonreaders to the pleasure and power of books. Through Townsend Press, his educational publishing company, he has developed the nonprofit Townsend Library, a collection of more than a hundred new and classic stories.

No answer keys for chapter reviews.

In the book there are very nice review quizzes. The huge problem is I don't have anyway to know if I am answering them correctly since there is no answer key. To get the answers, I would have to purchase the teachers edition. I've been out of school for awhile, but I'm pretty sure the books use to have the answers in the back, so you could check your work. This is only a problem if you aren't being instructor led. If you have a teacher, you can ask them if you're doing it right. If you aren't so lucky, and you're doing college online with no instructor interaction this presents a problem.

Save the Trees

Look up the criteria for academic essay grading at any university in the world, and you see the same qualities demanded: good research, demonstration of a good understanding of the material, neutral academic tone, and cogent argumentation. John Langan's "College Writing Skills" shows almost no guidance in how to get these qualities down, and there is not a single good example of sound academic writing in the book. Instead we get puff- pieces and moronic, juvenile trash like the following:
"When Mom and Dad and your sisters and brothers begin to annoy you, harmless revenge may be just the way to make them quiete [sic] down for a while... Just before the meal, throw a handful of raisins into the food... clamp your hand over your mouth and begin to make odd noises. When they ask you what the matter is, point to a raisin and yell, Bugs [sic]. Dumping the food in the [waste] disposal, the car will head quickly for mcdonalds[sic]." (p.145 6th Edition). Another sample student essay recommends that one flirt with the professor for an A (p.150, "How to Con an Instructor") and yet another describes the author's assault on a senior citizen; the tone suggests self- serving banalities rather than actual remorse ("maybe the old man's pain, in some terrible way, had a purpose").
Besides the reading samples, the sheer size of the book is outrageous at 500 pages. As a style guide, the text itself is bloated and entire pages are entirely redundant to the point the author is making. I fail to see why a book on how to write clearly should be any longer than Strunk and White. Mcgraw- Hill: shame on you. Find an author who has actually written something other than a writing guide to write your next writing guide. Teaching writing is a drag enough without having to find some justification to not simply throw such dross in the dustbin.

Lots of review and practice activities

I purchased this textbook for ENG 101 which I am taking through StraighterLine. I didn't care about the condition that the book was in as long as it was cheap. I bought a "used-acceptable" book for $9. When it arrived I was shocked at the condition... other than a few bent pages and highlighting the book was perfect! Since my course was online, I really enjoyed all the review and practice activities in this book.

A straightforward introduction to E&M

Kip was the required text for the E&M course that I took as a college sophomore. As I was an undergraduate physics major, I had an ambitious goal for myself in regard to the level of understanding that I strove for, so I read Purcell and Feynman's E&M texts at the same time. I must say, however, that Kip was the most helpful of three and I recommend it to anybody wanting to learn E&M. Kip uses only MKS units, so the potential difference is in the very familiar unit of volts--which I found comforting! In MKS Gauss's law is stated without the use of an extra 4pi--another aspect that was to my liking. The appendices include a discussion of divergence and the differential form of Gauss's law--which was also helpful. I recommend this book to anyone taking his first look at sophomore level E&M--or the professional scientist or engineer who just needs to brush up on Maxwell's equations.

This is a very thorough and carefully written book. In fact, it is so good it is still required reading in many courses (Brunel U. for example).I cannot understand why it is out of print when so many course syllabuses still recommend it.

This is one of the very best textbooks I have ever seen.

This book is a clear and gentle introduction to E&M at the sophomore level. It also serves as a very useful reference for junior/senior level students. It is written in a very balanced and judicious way with real students very much in mind. The author pretends neither that a clever enough bare bones presentation will provide a magic short cut through all the difficulties, nor that oceans of chatty, apologetic prose will circumvent all the difficulties. What you find here is the voice of an experienced teacher who is committed to an honest, straightforward treatment of the material, and who really knew what to say and what not to say. It is a shame that this book is out of print. It is as good today as it ever was, and in particular it still fits in very well with the standard progression of mathematics and physics courses in the first two years of college. I wish it could be brought back into print so that it could be readily available to today's physics students. (Perhaps Dover could acquire it?)

About the Author
Kenneth J. Neubeck is Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Connecticut-Storrs. His articles have appeared in such journals as Social Problems, Social Policy, and Teaching Sociology, as well as several anthologies. Much of his work has focused upon issues of social and economic justice, covering such topics as the politics surrounding income maintenance programs, cultural values supporting economic inequality, and the relationship between central city downtown developmental and local neighborhood decline. This book is good enough that it should be updated to include the major enterprise initiatives; e.g., ecommerce, the role of eforms in document management, etc.. In the rapid evolution of document automation technologies, 1995 was a very long time ago.

About the Author
Y. K. Lin holds the Charles E. Schmidt Eminent Scholar Chair in Engineering at Florida Atlantic University. He founded the Center for Applied Stochastics Research at Florida Atlantic University and has served as its Director since 1984. He received his Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering (Structural) from Stanford University, and Doctor of Engineering honoris causa from the University of Waterloo, Canada. Prior to moving to Florida, he taught for two years in China, one year in Ethiopia, and 24 years (1960-1983) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as Professor of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering. He is a Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and American Academy of Mechanics. He has served as a consultant for defense, aerospace, automotive companies, and government laboratories. His publications include Probabilistic Theory of Structural Dynamics (McGraw-Hill, 1967; Krieger Publishing Co., 1976), and over 200 technical papers. He is the recipient of the Alfred M. Freudenthal Medal and the Theodore von Karman Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers, the J. P. Den Hartog Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Alexander von Humboldt Award for Senior U.S. Scientists from Germany. A Registered Professional Engineer in Florida and Illinois, Lin is listed in Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in America, and the International Who’s Who in Education.

G. Q. Cai holds a joint appointment of Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Center for Applied Stochastics Research at Florida Atlantic University where he received a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. His work has been presented at multiple conferences and published in the Journal of Applied Mechanics, Journal of Sound and Vibration, Probabilistic Engineering Mechanics, the AIAA Journal, the International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics, and the Journal of Engineering Mechanics.
